Jeep Shut Down While Driving - Battery Keeps Dying

Hello everyone! I have a 2017 jeep patriot 2.4 L. Before I tell you about my current issue, I would like to let it be know that since I have owned the vehicle (purchased brand new), I have replaced the battery 3 times. The last time I replaced it was September 2022.

About 3 weeks ago, my jeep clicked and didn't start so I got a jump. 30 mins into my driving, my jeep completely shut down while I was driving, (power, lights, everything). My boyfriend jumped me so I was able to make it home, however, when it started back up, the radio screen was non functional, the headlights would not shut off, wipers wouldn't work, nor would the turn signals.

I towed the jeep to a mechanic who originally thought it was the alternator, but he said more than likely it wasn't the issue due to the issues it was having. He ran the computer on it and said it was reading no errors. He thinks its the TIMP.
My boyfriend was driving my jeep to work since it is just down the road.

About a week later, I went into the fuse box in the engine compartment to check some fuses that were related to my issues. All of the fuses I checked were good. I started my jeep, and everything was functioning again. I thought I was in the clear.

Well.. now I am having issues again. The battery keeps dying on me. I have a portable jump battery starter which seems to be working, but I am terrified to drive my jeep more than a couple of miles from my home in the chance it will shut down again. Has anyone had this issue? He said the TIMP's are roughly $1200 and they are on national back order. The jeep dealership said they have 10 vehicles waiting on their lot waiting for a new TIMP replacement.

Thank you in advance!

Its a long shot, but have you tried a complete hard reset of the computers? Disconnect both battery leads and zip tie them together to drain any residual power that may be stored in capacitors and leave it that way for about 10 minutes. Computers can glitch and have a flipped bit or something in a memory register. It can’t hurt and it's free to try.

@savvygirl, a couple of things; were the three batteries that were replaced ever load tested to confirm they were bad?

Has the charging system ever been load tested?

Have the cables all been checked, including the connection at the starter?

Also, I can't find the post but a while back someone had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a loose connection on the cable that runs from the battery to the TIPM.
When it comes loose it does about the same thing to the system as disconnecting the cable from the battery (loss of all electrical power, etc.)

So sorry to hear of these concerns, savvygirl. If you don't find the answers you're looking for from the other forum members, we would recommend a dealership visit. If you decide to go that route and need support, let us know.

Had that happen on my 2010 on a trip made it back home barely, put in a newer but USED TIMP everything work except Right head light and Right Blinker re-ground them and got them working. Since the TIPM i got didnt have heated seats i jumped from an open 20 fuse slot to heated seat slot and double fused both ends of that jumper...ran well like that for years ( with my ass warm too)...This Summer ready to get correct remanfacture TIPM, new gas tank and finish left-right rear control arms bushing that been sitting in the back hatch...life took an interesting turn so this April will be a Year from healing...

The TIPM always seem to be the Big issue and were CHIT!

Did you have your radio at time go totally dark then at radon come back

Good luck to you!

If the vehicle had enough power to eventually start up, but radio/screens are blank, highly unlikely to be related to a bad alternator. Radios/screens take very little current to light, as opposed to lots of amps for starting. If alternator wasn't functioning properly, by the time the vehicle dies, your battery test would show little current, but might still have enough to light a screen, but not re-start. Before throwing more $$$ guessing at big-buck stuff, have the battery load tested, have the alternator and charging system tested, check ALL battery cables and grounds. If those all check out, highly likely it is a bad TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module). Had to replace one on my '06 Daytona a couple years ago, and ran into the long wait, national backorder stuff too at that time. As some have mentioned, you can roll the dice and try getting one from several online sources if you Google replacement TIPM and look for your make/model.

you have a loose battary terminal and or maybe some corrosion on the terminal that cohld be interfering with the current flow. get a 10mm socket and tighten it. had a similiar thing happen.
