CVT replacement cost

I have a whining noise coming from my engine, whine is linked to speed, not engine RPM. From what I've read on various posts it sounds like the CVT is shot. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to have it looked at, my car is not under warranty (it is a 2007 pre-lifetime warranty). If it is the CVT, what am I looking at it to get it replaced?

~ $5000 to replace it. Mine whined for 12,000 miles before it failed and refused to get out of "2nd" gear.

One think you may notice is if you're on the highway, you can probably find a sweet spot with the gas pedal where the whine will go almost completely away. It's the point where you are neither accellerating or decellerating.

I took it to the dealer where I bought my car and they said the transmission needs replacement. They quoted $4,365.00. I called another Jeep dealership and they quoted just under $4,000. Called a third and they said they wanted to look at it, no charge, to see if they think it needs a replacement. They mentioned a possible pump that could go bad causing the same noise. I'm going by tomorrow for them to take a look at it. Their replacement cost, if needed, is about the same as the cheaper quote I got.

Will keep you all posted.

A second option you may want to explore, if you have a reputable transmission shop in your area, that CVT IS rebuildable. Just because the Jeep dealer cant, or wont, tear it down, doesn't mean a skilled transmission shop wont do it. The parts are available, if a shop has a tech thats been trained in how to rebuild a CVT.

I hope it's not your trans and it's just a sleazy dealer trying to take advantage. I had a 2001 Impala that made a whining noise when I accelerated. I didn't notice it until a friend jokingly asked if I had a turbo under the hood. It turns out it was just a pump gone bad. I'm hoping you get good news from the dealer.

There's not many parts on that CVT you can do a "third R" on.....

That is one pricey tranny. Though I haven't replaced a Jeep tranny in ten years or so, my old GC was around $2500.

I'd look into the rebuild option as well if it doesn't turn out to be the pump.

IS IT TIME FOR A CVT FAILURE STICKY?

Thankfully, reported CVT failures are still really low in comparison to standard automatics. Just taking this forum as a sampling, we have over 13,000 members and I think we're still below 20 reported failures total. We've also had several reports of the PTU unit failing (That's the power takeoff unit which is bolted to the CVT to send the power to the rear wheels). When the PTU starts to fail it can also start making a whining noise.

Factory fluid change interval for the CVT is 120,000 miles and 60,000 miles for the PTU.

Tx Todde, very reassuring numbers on reliability. Like I've said before, only one tranny in over 600K miles of Jeepin'. Hoping this CVT goes the distance and we get another 5 years out of it.

I've only got 84,000 kms on my 2008 Patriot's CVT and had the transaxle fluid overheat light come on during our last highway trip.
We've also had the whining during uphill sections on our last few trips. The start up is jumpy in the city at times as well.
This seems crazy considering the low mileage. I'll check the PTU first and then change the CVT fluid, but that's a crazy cost to replace the CVT!
Chrysler Canada has replied that beyond the warranty time period they accept no responsibility - after taxpayers bailed them out!? Depending on how it works out, it may be the last Chrysler product I buy.

I had a seal replaced on "warranty" after it expired but I doubt the manufacturer was involved at all. I called the shop like the day my warranty expired and they were booked solid for about a week but he told me to bring it in, gave me a date and didn't charge me. Probably just the dealer keeping a customer happy since it was a cheap fix. If I had any real problems they likely would not have been so helpful.

Edit: I also have the manual not the CVT so I can't speak for getting that serviced at a mopar shop!

i get a horrendous whine all the time in my 5spd manual yet the dealer says it's normal. i have lots of warranty left and perhaps they are hoping it fails outright if it does outside of warranty?

funny how my manual can whine crazy and it's normal yet your cvt whines and you need a new trans? i know they are different animals, but still, a whine is a whine...

hey everyone I just bout a 09 jeep patriot with 77720 miles on it. I had it for 2 weeks. im hearing some rubbing sound coming from the trans. is it failing? it still shifts no problem and accelerated with no problem. but I only hear when im decelerating. I took it to the dealer I bought it from and he claim he cant find whats worng with it. HELP ME ...SAD CASE

I would get a transmission fluid change at shop that knows cvt's. One that works on nissans specifically since they use the exact same cvt transmission. Have them change the fluid and see if it goes away (its about time to have it changed anyways, unless you have records that it has already been done). or if they can give you a different recommendation. The dealer you bought it from, especially if its a used car dealer usually don't have the best service departments.

For anyone with a whining noise...

I once thought my CVT was going out but it was actually the alternator pulley.

Sounds weird, I know.

Our alternators have a decoupler pulley instead of a fixed pulley.

They sometimes start to whine really loud and will make you think you have a major problem.

So if your transmission is still acting normal but you have a whine at the front right of your engine I would highly suggest you take a look at your alternator pulley.

You can replace just the pulley but I just bought an entire replacement alternator with pulley mounted off Amazon for around $150. They may cost more now.

Good luck with your whine!

we have a 2010 Jeep Patriot. having the issue of temp light going off after traveling on highway over 70mph for long distances.the car slows and then eventually stops. Took it to a garage and they suggested replacing the CVT which will cost about $650. My question - as I am hesistant to spend this- is will this likely fix the problem? Anyone have experience with such a replacement? Car has over 100K miles.

A CVT replacement will be way more than $650, more like $4-5k.

More likely a transmission fluid and filter change is what you should be looking at doing. All kinds of threads and info on this site about it.

Here's one thread of many:

You can also make sure the transmission cooler out by the radiator isn't clogged up with dirt and debris.

Here's another good thread with a video on how to change the fluid and filters;
