Hey guys,

I've been getting a weird sound from my Patriot recently and figured maybe y'all could help. Essentially, most of the time when I give it gas and the RPM is between 1.5 and 2, there's this gurgling/growling sound. Sounds like when you're driving a stick shift and you let the clutch out without giving it enough gas. I'm pretty sure that's what's happening here, but I have an automatic CVT. The sound doesn't happen outside of this RPM range. Also, if I shift manually, the sound does not happen at all. Usually it doesn't make the noise when starting from a stop or if the RPM moves through the region quickly.

I've attached a couple links where you can kind of hear it. I'm thinking it's a transmission issue, but I wasn't sure and wanted to get another opinion before I take it to the dealership.

My Jeep is a 2011 Latitude X, 4WD w/ CVT and ~97,000 miles.

The transmission actually broke down about a year ago and I got it replaced (not cheap). They told me I had a 24 month warranty on it, but I need to clarify that since my receipt doesn't say anything like that.

Honestly I can't hear the noise, but you drive it every day and might hear something subtle I can't hear in your video.

I had a CVT fail and it made a humming noise all the time. My warranty covered it.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to have it checked. Hopefully your dealer is reputable and will stand by the warranty if needed. If your replacement tranny was a factory rebuilt it probably came with a warranty and really it ought to go the distance.

It's from about 0:05 to 0:09 in the first vid. I think the second video is louder, it's in the first couple seconds. It is a bit quiet in the video, but it's definitely there.

I think the replacement tranny was new from what they told me.

you could try to reset the memory in your driving computer. I do it once while it might help. all you need to do is disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes.

I also cannot hear any abnormal noises in your videos. My CVT has a growling noise when I am moving slowly (like moving less than 10 MPH in backed up traffic) if I accelerate through that speed or RPM range the noise goes away or doesn't happen in the first place. Mine has done it since new and several other CVT Patriots I have been in have done it as well. I think it is a function of the programming and the CVT not quite being convinced it needs to change ratios but knowing it doesn't want to stay in the same ratio at such low RPMS and speed. I have been doing my own CVT fluid changes for a while and haven't noticed any excessive metal shaving or indications of wear and I get stuck in a lot of traffic (driving around Washington D.C.).

I have a similar issue with my 2016 Patriot. When crusing and I hit the 1500-2000 RPM range it will feel like I'm in too high a gear and let the RPMS drop too low if I were driving a manual and you get that noise along with the lack of power/response on the throttle. I tend to notice it more when going up inclines. If I take my foot off the gas and let RPM drop some and then then give it gas, accelerating through region quickly its fine. FWIW, I can't hear the issue in the video either, but I know exactly the issue you're talking about.

I have a similar issue with my 2016 Jeep Patriot. Mine happens when at 30mph or faster. I hear a growl that becomes louder with speed. I have tried to get an appointment at my local Jeep dealership however no response.

Did you ever figure this out? Having the same issue with my 2015 Jeep Patriot. I was turned away by the dealership TWICE because they didn't want to figure it out after it threw no codes. Hoping someone has figured it out.

Well, there's been no solution/resolution posted so I'd say no, it's never been figured out, or at least not that we know.

Also I want to point out that this thread was talking about a 2011 vehicle with a CVT, so for those of you that have 2014 and newer you may have the 6 speed automatic.
For those of you who do have a CVT, if the fluid and BOTH filters haven't been changed in the last 50k miles then I recommend you get it done.
Regardless of transmission, you may want to have the fluid level checked to make sure it isn't too high or low.

Also, the growling might not be transmission related, but a wheel bearing, a CV joint in one of the axles or something else.
