We like happy endings! :)

I wonder how many people would just figure their tranny was shot, curse the CVT, FCA, their dealer, then either spent a fortune or sell it for peanuts. You did your due diligence and saved $3000. Meanwhile your wife has been listening to you fret about it for a week. So how about spending a bit of what you saved and take her out to dinner? :latchon:
I am the wife ... lol

Is the whistle related to the RPMs? If not, the first thing I'd think of is that a vacuum leak -- mighta got jarred loose while your Jeep was being worked on. Maybe not transmission related.
its not related to the RPMs its still around... it starts up after driving highway fro over 30 min...other than that its been driving fine... the whistling just gets annoying...

8 qts? The most Ive seen is at 7.5 from a Valvoline website and that was a full refill...I have 6.5qts in mine....I would be worried to overfill these transmissions since they tend to foam up....

I just don't get why there is not a definite guide to how much fluid these transmissions take
maybe he just charged me for the full amount he had to buy??? possibly..

Hey Aaron...other guys!! Great news I picked up my Jeep today and its running great again... shoots like a rocket lol
My mechanic called me Yesterday and told me after examining further it was not clear fluid they were seeing it was no fluid and that was my problem... I went over with him what Aaron suggested and (told him it was advice from my mechanic brother in Texas so he wouldn't think how i dare i tell him how to do his job...) he 100% agreed and said it just needed to be serviced and he did everything you suggested down to cleaning under the green bean can...he got laughs from that.
He said he drove it back roads and high...running fine and changing gears much better.
He let me know it would feel a little different just being serviced....it does...but it works..its driving...im happy
he said drive for a week and just let him know how it was.

work done:

TF495 transmission pan filter gasket kit
06811 (8) quarts transmax CVT transmission fluid
**removed lower tranny pan gasket and filter, cleaned everything in gasket area, removed battery and parts to access top filter, cleaned filter, refilled with fluid.

all was $234.13 with labor and tax.

Do you guys think my headache is over for now? He did tell me to drive for a week and get back to him how it was but i drove for an hour home highway and it did great...better than its drove in a long time..

Im happy i have him and happy for all the advice here...I am a florist not a mechanic...But i know a thing or two just from owning used cars and breakdowns....
the Jeep by far s my most favorite vehicle. ill defiantly tune in and keep in touch a week from now how the driving was.
Thanks again!! -Kale
Glad to help! There are a lot of helpful people here.

Okay so I drove to work today it’s about 40 minutes on the highway towards the end of my trip I heard an extremely loud whistling does anybody know what that is is that normal because I just had it serviced?
"an extremely loud whistling" is kind of a generic description. Where is it coming from? Did you have the windows down? Did it change pitch or intensity with engine RPM's, vehicle speed, A/C fan speed? Need a lot more info to help with this one.

Thats really all i got.... its coming from front end of jeep... its like the front left side... no ac, can hear loud and clear with windows up or down... its very high pitch ... happens after driving highway 65/70 mph after about 20-30 min..

i do feel resistance in driving in that speed range too ... rpms stay between 2500/3000 ...i think thats normal for highway...but i do feel a slight struggle and a heavier struggle if i need to use ac or defrost..

this all happened after being serviced..

its driving a hell of alot better...i mean its driving period. im just a little nervous to take any long trips...and all my friends fam live 1 1/2 - 2 hours away....i love in the middle of nowhere in the sticks..

i should just try it out...i do have AAA if something goes wrong

Yeah.... I'm having a hard time even imagining what you're hearing.

I can tell you that my 2014 does run about 2600-2800 RPM at freeway speeds. And there is some high pitched "whine" noise at sustained highway speeds. The CVT is different driving than other auto transmissions. It feels like there is more "drag". A regular auto trans will immediately shift to neutral when you release the accelerator, the CVT does not. So there is a little more "engine braking" going on with the CVT. Not as much as with a manual, but more than a traditional auto trans. My suggestion at this point is to drive it, get comfortable with the way it drives, and by all means go visit your friends and family.

I have a 2013 Jeep Patriot Sport 114,000 miles. Two days ago I took a 2 hour drive to see my brother, about 8 min from his house my RPMs went high and I could not accelerate.... this was very scary going about 75mph on a 4 lane highway. I finally got over to the breakdown lane, just as I came to a stop my transmission temp warning light came on and then went out after about a minute. I called my mechanic to describe what happened he told me to cautiously drive to a service area to get my fluids checked out. I tried to take off but it felt like I was pulling something heavy so I decided to call aaa and have it towed. The mechanic kept my Jeep for 3 hours then called and said flat out: “ I can’t duplicate the issue you had... but I’m reading a code P0741 (torque converter clutch hydraulic circuit) and that there was torque slippage causing the CVT transmission to overheat. He said this is not something that can be fixed and I needed a new transmission that will run me $3-6k. Charged me $100 and told me to drive under 60mph home. I called my own mechanic and let him know... he said that sounded all wrong and to come in. Which made me feel a lot better.... I went in the next day and he said he did feel what I was feeling and that it wasn’t switching into the gears after about 40mph. He said he wanted to clear out that it wasn’t the filter or a switch before he told me I ultimately needed a new or a rebuild. My Jeep is not under warranty... I’m on my 3rd year of my 5 year loan with 32 pmts left. There’s no way I can trade in I have 114k miles... I owe over $10k ... I looked on Kelly that trade value is a little over $3k I’ve had zero issues with this car until now.... I replaced my spark plugs about 3 weeks ago ... was my last maintenance... I keep up with all maintenance, tires, breaks, oils changes. Is anyone else experiencing this?
yeah i bought mine wiht 111k miles on it, knowing all the while that i would most likely not make it to 200k without needing a new cvt. fwd 2.0 lattitude 2014. in the two years ive owned it ive replaced literally everything. name something, ive changed it. same thing happened to me today. 159k. im a mechanic. must be your first time singing the mopar blues.

I don't have the CVT and can only offer some hope. I think that the first mechanic might have been premature to suggest you need a new transmission. That he could not duplicate the issue raises red flags. I checked out the P0741 code in the factory service manual and it does suggest that you first make sure the fluid is in good condition and at proper level. It also suggests making sure there are no wiring problems, there is no TSB work required, or computer reflash in order. After going through ALL of the diagnostic procedures, the factory service manual suggests changing the valve body, not an entire transmission rebuild. This will still be expensive if you have to pay shop labor rates. Have you ever changed the fluid? It's recommended here to not exceed 60,000 miles and some members change it more often. Spent fluid causes lots of problems. Good luck. Hopefully you have a trusted mechanic that will try to get this fixed without raking you over the coals. I expect more experienced CVT owners to chime in and give you more help.
Bought 2011 Patriot CVT trans. Anyone I tell says you will need to replace trans soon.66,000 mi

Not if you change the fluid and filters at least every 50,000 miles. Some say 35,000 miles is better. If you haven't done it, or don't know if it's been done, do it, pronto!
Expensive? Yes.
As expensive as a new tranny? Not nearly.

Fluid and filter changes can be DIY, cheaper than the dealer and not super hard.

Lots of people here have done it and not all are mechanics.

More info on it here:

Hi, How was the problem you described in your original post fixed? Did a fluid and filters change do the trick? My daughter has a 2013 Patriot with the exact issues you described. Thank you very much!!

Hi wpdv, welcome to the board!

If you're hearing whining, the transmission overheat light is coming on, slowdown with high RPM, etc. and you aren't sure when the last fluid and filters change was (s/b every 30-50k),then changing the fluid and filters might take care of it.

Thank you Sandstone. We’ll be doing this today. Autozone pulled two codes: P0741 & P0777. She just left the transmission shop, they told her from the codes that she shouldn’t the waste money fluid and filter change. From your forum it appears there is a chance (even if a small chance) that the condition will be corrected with fluid and filters change. I will report back.
