Hi, first post. I've read probably every post in the forum and elsewhere online on CVT issues and still I'm uncertain about what to do so here it goes...
I purchased a 2008 Patriot 2.4L 4x4 two years ago with 93K. I've previously owned XJs and WJs and I honestly love the Patriot. I've put a lot of miles on going back and forth from New England to Florida and I'm now at 119K. Maybe three or four times over the past few months I've experienced a loud whine - almost more like a screech or squeal - lasting no more than a minute coming from the shift column area. It does not seem responsive to acceleration. Just comes on, is very loud, and goes away. The key thing I've noticed is this has only happened during or after rain when I've driven though large puddles or flooded roads. From reading the forums, I think this is possibly something to do with 1) the alternator, 2) the PTU - water/moisture getting in through breather hole? or 3) the CVT.
Since I'm due the CVT fluid/filter change at 120K I figured I'd get this done as the first step. I made an appointment at a local dealer and when I showed up for my appointment I double-checked to see if they were going to drop the pan and change the filter/strainer too and they said no, that this was not a serviceable part and they would only exchange fluid. Service guy got an attitude when I questioned him, reminding him that it says fluid AND filter in the maintenance schedule for 120K. Anyway, I called another local dealer for the next week.
Went for my appointment today I think everything is all good because I made sure paperwork said fluid, filter, etc. I also purchased trans cooler filter (FK-403) at local auto parts store and asked if they'd install. No problem, they said. Well, guy comes out 30 mins later and says sorry, but the CVT is not serviceable, meaning they would not even do a fluid exchange. I talked to the shop foreman, who also gave me attitude and first said there is no filter in the trans (I know a mesh strainer is not technically a filter but still, don't bs me) and the CVT is meant to stay sealed for the lifetime of the vehicle. I ask why it says fluid/filter change at 120K in owners manual and he says it must be a typo. He offers to show me fluid condition on dipstick and it wasn't black or dark brown which is good, but it also didn't look like new (it was sort of brownish-green). I told him any fluid must break down over time and I'd rather pay a couple hundred now for fluid service than a couple thousand for new tranny down the road. He didn't want to touch it.
I called four other dealerships today, including two of the largest in Boston metro/New England and all but one refused to do the service, claiming it's a "sealed unit" and not meant to be serviced. Dumbfounded I called Chrysler customer service and asked if there was some sort of dealer memo, TSB or whatever coaching these service guys to stay away from CVT service and they seemed as dumbfounded as I am. Fluid and strainer service is part of the "standard procedure" in the FSM, and some of you have posted these instructions on other threads.
End of story, I made an appt to get CVT fluid/filter changed at the one dealership out of six in a 50 mile range that would agree to this, but I'm honestly now nervous to have them do the work. Even though the guy on the phone said they'd done a few before, it seems Jeep dealers, at least in the Boston metro, are clueless about this. I just moved here and don't have a space where I can do the work myself right now, so what do you guys think? Is it worth giving the one Jeep dealership who agreed a shot? Seek out an independent transmission shop? I tried the local Nissan dealer but they seemed hesitant to work on it... "why don't you call another jeep dealer?" I noticed they only had Nissans on the lifts.
The whole point of going to a dealer is getting trained techs who are supposed to know more than I do to work on it. Right?? I've never had so many dealerships *not* want to take my money... except when it comes to the $85 they wanted today to change the cabin air filter... no thanks, I'll do that myself.
