My girlfriend was driving her patriot the other day when all of the sudden it stopped accelerating the car did not stall, no dash lights came on, and it wouldnt even rev. after she turned it off and turned it back on everything seemed to be fine until 3 days later it happened again still no dash lights and again it was fine after she turned it off then back on. any info on this problem thanks in advanced.

2015 jeep patriot 36,000 miles

Welcome! Her Patriot seems low miles for problems but it is going on 8 years old. What she is describing sounds like "limp mode" where it slows down to protect itself. You need to see what codes have been thrown. Even if they weren't visible on the dash or were but aren't showing now, it may have stored some. If you don't have a code reader, many auto parts stores will check for free.

There are others on here who know far more than me. Hopefully they'll chime in.

it wont even go 2 MPH theres absolutely no power to the throttle. Throttle body maybe?

Possibly, but it usually causes the "lightning bolt" / ETC light to come on.

As Ignatz mentioned, a good next step is to see if there are any codes set or stored.

Spark plugs? 🙏🏼
Bad plugs cause rough running, misfires or stalling.
Seems more like a throttle body or throttle pedal sensor issue, but no lightening bolt or check engine light is odd. Limp mode doesn't seem to be engaging either because that sets the engine rpm to about 1500 and runs terrible, but you can still drive. I drove two miles home getting up to about 25-30mph in places.

The dealership replaced the plugs in mine before I bought it @45k miles… by the 73k I’m at now… plenty of response,… but the fuel efficiency is out of whack. The plugs go for awhile… so you’re right, @todde702 given the mileage of that particular post, the plugs may not be the issue.

Since cycling the ignition apparently clears the conditions, I'd consider driving with a scanner that can log and store data from various sensors and modules to see if you can catch whatever it is when it happens. Otherwise you'll just end up throwing parts / $$$ at it and may never know if it's fixed.

Another option is going to a reputable dealer for a diagnostic, though they may not find anything either.

One thing you can try for free is do a full reset of the computers. Maybe something is glitching. Disconnect both battery terminals from the battery and zip tie them together for ten minutes or so to fully discharge any residul power in capacitors. This basically factory resets them.

Probably had an overheated tranny. Mine went into limp mode off and on with the tranny light. I got out and beat the hell out of the thermostatic valve by the battery box for the tranny and it ran the rest of the day fine! $72 part at jeep but hard to get at.

If you overheated the tranny, chances are the fluid is shot, too. If you have the CVT, the fluid and filters (2) should be changed twice as often as the owners manual says.

Changed tranny fluid and BOTH filters 10k miles ago and then again last year. that valve is suspect in many overheats i suppose. plus I have the off road pack and it has a big cooler. in 155k miles prior to this only went limp once at 98k miles up a desert hill. That tranny is just crap is the main issue.

Here’s the part where you decide to have it replaced and make sure she doesn’t drive it until the gas light comes on after this service is complete… ever, ever. Always make it a goal to top off before the tank gets to 3/4 as much as possible … especially even before the tank goes below 1/4… and a goal to definitely get to the pump before the light ever even comes on.

Basically good advice, but I've played Petroulette* many times and gotten away with it.

*Petroulette is a Sniglet. It's like Roulette, but you play it with your gas (petrol) gauge by seeing how many gas stations you can pass with the low fuel light on.
