My son's 2016 patriot he purchased new, was driving the other day and it quit. he got it home but now it doesn't start. Had it towed to local dealer as it was suppose to be under warranty. They found a broken camshaft (their diagnosis) and want o replace the motor for $8000. and it isn't under their warranty. We traced back and it is covered under Century Plus warranty which is an outside company, called them and they said it is covered. so far we are out the $200 towing (which is also covered) and no vehicle for a week now. They have not started the repair and need to talk to the warranty company first.

Is this a common problem with these undersized motors?? Glad I talked him into the extended warranty!!

That is very rare. I had a short wheelbase Caravan with a different 4 cyl. engine and the camshaft broke at 190,000 miles. It was a non interference engine, so I was able to just throw a new camshaft in (I checked bearing clearances). I drove it for another 10,000 miles and then sold it.

Excellent that you have an aftermarket warranty. It's very rare for them to be worthwhile. They may become more necessary as new vehicles become much more complex (computers, etc.).

For the most part, extended warranties cover only the mechanical components. I also share your cynicism about aftermarket warranties.

Also agree that mechanical failures are pretty rare these days, among our Patriots and most other makes as well.

@jimvw57, I hope you get yours back on the road soon.

Thanks! Told my son he would be stretched just making the obscene payments because of the Chrysler Credit interest they charged so the extended warranty would cover just about everything and he has had bad luck with cars. luckily it worked out in his favor for once.

He drives it and I get to pay for it. not sure how that happened....

Latest news... the warranty company denied the claim because there is sludge in the engine... I'm sure it is some kind of super sludge that would reach up and break a camshaft!! Even if it caused it to lose oil pressure, the bearings would fail, not break a camshaft....Here we go fighting for something that we paid for and then told it was worthless. Open to suggestions...

I've always bought extended warranties. And I've almost always used them. I used the extended warranty MANY times with my 2014 patriot. Bearings, suspension components, frames parts, the radio, throttle body and more. I would have paid well over $10,000 to replace all of that if I hadn't had it. I don't trust companies these days to build anything of quality and those warranties are not that expensive. Always get it. The warranty was roughly $2,000 and the radio alone Chrysler quoted $1,400 before they realized I had the warranty.

Heading up to the dealer we originally purchased jeep from with paperwork, apparently they can't tell me their correct email address to send it by computer. 1 1/2 hours of driving to hand them a couple of sheets of paper...

Aftermarket warranty companies can be a huge pain to deal with. My dad fought with one for 2 months before they would finally cover the transfer case in his old YJ.

Hopefully for your sake you have oil change receipts from the time he's owned it because that's what they'll try to base it off of.

yup, unfortunately we always changed oil ourselves using strictly Mobil1 and all he has are the dates, no miles. I'm thinking it will be a long battle and I don't think we will like the results....

From a parts store or online? In store they may be able to look up the transactions if he used a card.

May also be worth it to have an independent shop give an estimate on a used engine. That'll save quite a bit.

Oil was bought from Walmart, best prices for Mobil 1 so no sales record from the store, using mostly cash.

Strange thing is, My soon drove past the dealer and the truck is sitting outside, he looked underneath and it appears the pan is on the motor and no parts laying in the back end. You'd think if they were going to pull the motor they wouldn't bother putting it back together... He called about picking it up to take it to an independent shop and they said it would be $360 for what they had done so far and take an hour to put back together....Now they claim it is back together and ready for him to pick it up. I am wondering if it is still full of oil (that they claim was sludge and they drained) and if they did take anything apart. The original purpose was to do the cam/oxygen sensor wiring recall, my guess is they hadn't done it so they needed the hour to perform the repair so they could back charge Jeep for the recall fix. This way they are being paid twice for having the vehicle there. Whole thing screams SCAM to me. especially since the recall would cause the vehicle to not start and stall out. No telling what the did to it to cover their butts.

Guess I will retrieve the truck and take it to an independent shop, get it fixed and let the Lawyers sort it out. so far 3 weeks and no vehicle(no work either as he uses it for work)

NEW INFORMATION

I went ove and recued the poor little jeep, Looked under the hood and the motor had not been apart, pulled the dipstick, full of oil and did not look discolored, still semi clear (like Mobil 1 should) and the bill ($406 worth) stated the cam was broke, compression on cylinders is 216,90, 100,100... sludge in oil. Plugs were wet except for cyl 1.....

If the plugs are soaked, a compression reading would be worthless without injecting oil in they cylinder as gas will wash the oil out and prevent the rings from sealing. Plugs being wet shows they are not firing from ... say.. a cam sensor failure which is the recall it was brought in for. The recalls were not done as they thought we might not fix it... NOT THEIR CALL! they were told to do the recall we were notified for, and wouldn't that be gravy money even if the motor was shot? they would still get paid for doing the recall. The 'sludge' as they call it was a bit that was right by the breather tube and was probably form unburned fuel due to the cam sensor(??) but it does not show up on the dipstick.. I know I am just an old school mechanic, haven't worked at a dealership for 35 years, but isn't this just common sense??

I noticed their shop was completely empty (on a Monday morning at 9:00??) and mechanics standing around with nothing to do..
Obviously we do not want this place to work on our vehicles.

Seems like it's common knowledge to stay away from that dealer. Maybe send a PM to JeepCares and see if they can assist you.

Found an old recall from 2017, seems patriots and Journeys had a problem with the wiring connector for the cam sensors and there was a recall to replace it. Only affected vehicles built from May 8,2016 to July 12, 2016. checking the build date on the kid's Patriot. Document I found outlines the exact problems he is having to a T...

** Update** production date on door says 11/15 so this may not apply. Next step is to pick up a pair of sensors and replace them . Vehicle is sitting in a snowbank, and right now it a balmy 20 degrees outside. perfect for working under the hood without a garage. Putting in both sensors (codes P0340 and code P0365 Bank 1 sensors 1 and 2) is still cheaper than having it towed 100 some miles to a reputable dealer. may take a while to get parts...

installed both cam sensors and new spark plugs, When I reset p0340 code it starts and runs terrible, and dies. code is back. replaced with Delphi sensors, maybe I got a defective one?? looking for ideas.

It is better a before I was getting a P0340 and a P0560 code, and wouldn't even try to start. Hoping for something easy to try before I end up with a 100 mile tow to the dealership

next round of parts should arrive today,
ordered another cam sensor, wiring connector, and a spare crank sensor. Unfortunately our luck with weather looks to be over as the highs Saturday look to be about 5 degrees, Sunday looks like a -19 degrees (that's below zero) so may not be working on the Jeep when it gets that cold out (sitting in a snow bank right now)
