No, its not normal.

Is it misfiring? Bad coils will show up when its working hard.

If the shaking is constant I'd guess it was a tire out of balance, but you say while accelerating. But not at speed?

Could be a defective tire having issues under stress. Cheap way to check this is to cross-change the fronts with the rears. If it goes away then you've narrowed it down to two of them.

If it persists, it could be something mechanical. I'd start with the engine mounts.
Do you get a click, rap or bang when you start to accelerate or decelerate? That would be a clue to the mounts.

is it normal for a 2012 to shake when accelerating from a stop? I feel it in the seat. Just bought my patriot a week or so ago.
If you bought it from a dealer with any kind of warranty, I'd get it back in and have the transmission checked ASAP. If it hasn't had the fluid and filters changed recently, I'd say start there.

Above I mentioned spark plug misfire. I don't know how much experience you have with autos, but Patriot plugs are only good for 30,000 miles which is on the short side by today's standards. With only a 4-banger, losing one cylinder is significant. As above, when it working hard is when you'll miss it and it will certainly cause a shake. Start with the easy stuff first! Plugs are a simple DIY job. There's a couple threads on here about changing them.

As for more serious stuff, if you're under warranty, let the place that sold it check it out. They probably 'bought' a warranty themselves when they sold you the vehicle just to cover themselves.

If they give you the old, "its normal" or can't find anything wrong, here's a long shot: I had what felt like the engine just quitting for a couple RPMs under added acceleration, i.e., when I was going from 40MPH to 55MPH, as in leaving a speed zone going up a hill or when entering a turnpike from an on-ramp. At first I thought it was the transmission slipping. However, I decided it was having a significant difference in tire wear. I had new tires up front, well-worn tires in back, and if I recall undersized as well. Once I got new tires the problem went away. My guess is that the differing sizes were confusing the ECM.

After posting my theory its gained a few followers on here.

I agree with Ignatz. My car was shaking at times while accelerating. It almost felt like something might be wrong with the transmission. Changed the plugs. Car runs like a champ.

how many miles did you change the spark plugs at?

my daughter's 2011 Jeep Patriot just started shaking upon acceleration. She has had the spark plugs changed. She had two new tires put on (with balancing and an alignment) before driving from VA to ME and back with no trouble. Once back in VA, the shaking started. Any advice??

My first guess is one of the tire weights got thrown. There's a lot of frost heaves and pot holes between Maine and Virginia. Easy to happen. Take it back where you got the tires. If it's just been a few weeks the place oughta check the balance for free, and likely even replace the missing weight as a goodwill gesture. That's happened to me a couple times, usually only right after I had them balanced -- one weight didn't get pinched on there quite well enough.

In any event, start with the cheap fixes first.
