Replace Catalytic Converter?

about a year ago i purchased a really clean 2010 patriot with 60,000 original miles on it from a reputable dealer. all was good except for when i took the car for a test drive, the engine sounded loud. having never owned a jeep before, i had nothing to compare it to. prior to the patriot, i owned a Hyundai sonata. i mentioned to the sales person that the engine sounded loud but they did not give any kind of feedback that impacted the matter. so i purchased the vehicle. with some time passing, the engine is much louder now. i have gotten a couple of exhaust places to look at the car and they are both pointing to the catalytic converter telling me that's the problem. the vehicle has a very nice exterior, no damage, no paint problems, inside of vehicle is good, really no issues except for that noise. it is worth investing 2g to have this vehicle fixed? also, wondering if the dealership bears any responsibility for this since the engine was noisy from the start. i have no warranty on the vehicle now. purchase warranty has expired. i asked about getting an extended warranty on the car on the day i purchased it and was told sales manager would get back to me. sales manager never did so i called a month later and never got a return call that time either. am wondering if it's too late to go back and ask for the extended warranty without mentioning the cc. feedback appreciated. thank you.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

I'd review your sales contract and see what it says, but since you bought it a year ago, you may be out of luck on an extended warranty.

With so few miles on it and nothing else seeming wrong, I'd look into getting it repaired.

There was a recall on the Catcon a while back, you can use your VIN to see if you are covered:

I presume your warranty is expired and most used car warranties are for the engine & drive train only. I doubt the catcon would be covered under most contracts. The recall is a great idea! A recall would apply to any subsequent owner, unlike an extended warranty which is usually restricted to the original owner. Definitely check using the link @Sandstone provided. A dealer can also check for you and they'd probably want the work.

Patriot engines are noisy, some liken it to a chainsaw. That shouldn't alarm you. Where is your noise coming from? If it's the engine compartment (you said the engine sounds noisy), it might be an exhaust gasket. Not on either of my Patriots, but I've had exhaust gaskets fail on some previous cars which definitely sounds like it was coming from the engine.

I would connect catcon noise with the exhaust system and would expect the sound to be coming from under your Patriot and not the engine compartment. Lots of things can happen to exhaust systems, especially if they've ever been off road. I once smashed the exhaust system on a car while driving in a city alley when my car slid off the thick ice and into the deep ruts. I went hat-in-hand to my very kind dealership (shout out to Merrimack Street Garage, Manchester NH) who got it covered under warranty. I never dreamed they'd do that!

Certainly get a couple of opinions. Get a look at it yourself if you can. With such low miles and in otherwise good shape, your Patriot should definitely be worth repairing.

Quick reminder if you have the CVT: get the fluid and both filters changed! That should be done twice as often as the owners manual recommends, so you're maybe a tad past due. Yes, it's going to cost you, but it's a lot less than a new transmission. Pardon me while I brag, but my first Patriot (an '08 and since sold to a friend) is over 300,000 on the original catcon. However, the tranny did not make it to the 120,000 mile service. Thankfully mine was covered under the lifetime warranty. :)

Another possibility is you've developed some cracks in the manifold part of the mani-vertor. Some folks had luck with removing it and having it welded. The cracks can cause an exhaust leak and you'd hear it from the top side behind the valve cover. There is a heat shield covering it so you'd have to remove that (and your top O2 sensor) to visually inspect it.

The converter only lasts about 10 years or 100,000 miles so it would need replaced anyway. I just bought a 16 and mines bad too. And like yours it's beautiful and runs great. As for is it worth it. Yeah do it. It'll make it so much better. You might consider changing the O2 sensors on the bank you replace to just to have it all 🆕

Wha-a-at?
My '08 Patriot went to 315,000 and the catcon was never replaced
My '14 Patriot is about to hit 200,000 and still on the original.
My '01 Grand Prix went to 225,000 before the catcon plugged.

I have my doubts that OP's problem is the converter, unless maybe the exhaust system has been damaged in some way. If it's been damaged, treat it like a minor accident and get it fixed. If it has been damaged to where you can hear it, that means there's an exhaust leak -- that's a safety issue so it will not pass state inspection and it will have to be repaired anyway.

@shydelogin, get another opinion!
