I just traded in my 2012 corolla for a 2016 patriot high altitude edition with CVT and I am in shock at how horrible my gas mileage is. I drive around 30 miles to work one way and use almost a whole quarter of a tank. im having to fill my tank every 2-3 days. im on the interstate most of the trip going 70-80. is this normal or could there be something wrong with the vehicle?

If you have a 2016 High Altitude then you should have the 6 speed auto instead of the CVT.

The Patriot is a box on wheels, so not real aerodynamic at 70-80.

If it hasn't had a spark plug change in the last 30k miles that might help.

Here's another thing you could try:

Being a 2016, you would only have a CVT if you have the FD2 off road package. Easy to tell as it would have front and rear tow hooks and the shifter bezel would have an "L" on it under the D. If that is what you have, then you'll be lucky to get 20mpg on the highway. I drive mine 50 miles a day on the highway and fill up every 3 days.

First off, Welcome!

As for fuel economy, I've had two FWD Patriots (2.4/CVT & 2.0 5-spd). Both will deliver 30MPG if driven easy. Not surprisingly the 2.0 5-spd does a little better. If you've got any AWD system you'll use more fuel if for no other reason because you're dragging around a heavier drive-train. Likewise, any automatic tranny will never be as economical as a standard. Finally, an FD2 is not at its best on the highway.

Patriots are reasonably fuel efficient but only if driven easy. When I say I'm getting the low 30s, I'm doing 50-55 MPH on rural highways. My 2.0 5-spd put out 30+ on the northern stretch of I-95 in Maine where the speed limit is 75 and I might have nudged the 80s, but there is literally no traffic there. It's pretty flat and I used the cruise control.

Comparing a Corolla and Patriot is not even an Apples:Oranges comparison, its an Apple:Turnips at best. In a swamp or a snowstorm you'll be glad you have a Patriot. Otherwise the Corolla is probably better suited to the purposes you describe. Unfortunately you may have purchased the wrong vehicle for your needs.

Oh, Patriots have very small gas tanks. Do your math, don't go by the gauge.
