Patriot owners with over 100,000 miles, what mechanical problems have you had?

I am thinking about buying a new 2011 Patriot and would love to hear from Patriot owners who have racked up more than 100,000 (mostly city) miles and hear about what mechanical problems you have had. In all honesty, I am concerned about the long term reliability of newer Jeeps. In my neck of the woods, I don't see a whole lot of them on the road with as many miles as my old Honda. Thanks for your answers.

Hey Tantor, my 08 Riot never had the chance to make it to 100,000 miles. In the 42,200 I was able to put on it, I had to have the O2 sensor replaced twice. The first time if I remember right was around 6-7K miles and again closer to 20K. I also had my sway bar bushings replaced at around 30k. I also had a clunking noise coming from the front driver wheel when going over bumps at slow speeds. Of course the service guy swore up and down he could never "duplicate the problem." So I'm not sure what the was about. The plastic trim along the outboard side of the driver seat snapped in half around 32K (well, it cracked and then snagged my jeans getting out and broke in half) they replaced it under warranty, but at 38k it broke again. Just cheap plastic I guess. My new 2011 seems like its built with much higher quality materials. Overall, I know I made it just short of half of what your looking for, but I think other than those minor things it held up quite well. I did learn that it can definitely take a hit! I'm sure you saw what happened to my baby. Well, I'm typing here today and other than a broken rib, id have to say I'm doing pretty good. I would highly recommend a Jeep Patriot to anybody. Hell, id bet my life on it.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a 2011 with over 100k on it. I've been driving mine all over the place since I bought it 2 weeks now and have racked up a whopping 365 miles...

Less that 100,000? Have 20,000 on my 15 month old 09. ONLY complaint I have is the stock Goodyears really really suck. Wet traction is near dangerous. In a word my experience has been swe-e-e-et. Ric

I have done 80k miles from new in my 08. Had a suspension bush replaced under warranty at about 58k and needed to clean the EGR (its a diesel) at 70k. No other faults. The plastics in the pre 11 cars are hard and some people feel cheap but they are bearing up very well in my car and better than some of the "dearer" looking plastics in other vehicles I have had.

so far so good!!

This thing is an all around great practical vehicle, i have an 08 4x4 sport 5-speed with a bunch of options. I bought it used with 27,000 miles on it 2 years ago and now have 70,000 and no mechanical issues at all, other than the front suspension being rebuilt (very common in pre 2011 models). The jury is still out on the 2011 as they have recently been released, but they did say that they have reconfigured the suspension so hopefully it holds up better. It was just a bad design in the lower control arm with the ball joints and then the tie-rods. The Jeep has been wonderful for me as i get 28 mpg with my All-Terrain tires on, you will not be dissapointed with this Jeep.

I've had one with 50000 miles plus on it up until two weeks ago. I've just bought a 2010. If only they could make this car watertight it would be a fantastic little car. I've had forty-five thousand trouble-free miles out of my last one.....and then The Leak struck...
Into the dealership under warranty five times. I've no idea if they finally nailed it 'cos I'm in another one now.
My only advice? Even if you live in the centre of the Chihuahua Desert, do not ( that should be DO NOT) get a car with a sunroof.
Actually, I now believe that to be a general truism: don't get a bloody sunroof, no matter what vehicle you're thinking of buying. In this age of top class air-con what the Donald Duck do you need a sunroof for? Unless it's more convenient for you to chuck scrunched up cigarette packets out onto the highway....

that is a falsehood, infact there are just as many patriots that leak without the sunroof, if you are going to get a leaker that is. it has to do with how the roof was bonded. I have a 2009 with sunroof , no leaks. besides a well designed sunroof doesnt leak, I had some ****ty cars with sunroofs and they didnt leak.

Ditto Jakeb06tc, the Patriot is a very practical all-purpose vehicle. It may not be best in any particular category, but its no worse than 2nd place in any category. Has traction almost as good as a Wrangler, rides almost as good as a Buick (and better than its sister the Caliber), good interior space for a compact SUV, good fuel economy even compared to most bona-fide cars, and while not a sports car, its not dead on its feet. In my experience (55,000 miles) its been reliable and durable (no repairs at all). Most benefits with the fewest trade-offs. :smiley_thumbs_up:

Only negative is that you might not want to tow anything significant.

I suppose that, now I've bought a newer car, Sgtarky, the whole sunroof/leak thing is just history from my point of view; part of my driving CV. But it still annoys me that I kept on showing the workshop guys how water drained away, no problem, from one side of the sunroof sills; I really, actually showed them with a little flask of water but, when you poured water into the other sill nothing came out the back; It just soaked into the headlining. Everybody just kept on, "Yeah, we see what you mean", took the car away for about a week, did a massive body job at Chrysler's expense and...gave me a car back that still leaked! I really got the impression that, when I was speaking, they must have heard waves breaking or birds twitterin' or something. 'Cos as sure as crap stinks they weren't really listening!

I have an 07 with 104K miles on it. It just had its first major repair which was to replace a bad ball joint on the driver's front and struts. The other side was still tight and good. I think this joint was bad for some time now. It feels great now and I like the slightly stiffer struts (KYBs) My fuel mileage is pretty steady at 25-28. I like the Jeep a lot, but I know it is not near as heavy duty as my 97 Cherokee.

On the other hand, I can carry stuff a lot easier in this rig since the front passenger seat folds down. 8' lumber and you close the lift gate. I think it is a great all-rounder.

I agree with DJP63 that the Cherokee seemed tougher. However I couldn't keep a clutch in my Cherokee (Yes, I know how to drive a standard). Had a rash of other issues with the Cherokee before 25000 and providentially it got wrecked without anyone getting hurt. Got an awful repair job from an "authorized" repair shop and traded it in pronto when the clutch started slipping again.

I just turned in my '08 Pat with 68k miles and picked up a '11.

The only issues I had where replacing both outer tie-rods (at about 40k), and the roof water leak. I didn't have a sun-roof. This was a problem where the seal between the skins of the roof where not sealed correctly at the factory. One trip to the dealership and it was handled under warrenty.

I would agree with everyone else, the '11 is more quite and feels more refined. I also switched from a 5-spd to the CVT. My wife won't drive a 5-spd. The CVT isn't bad, just takes some getting used to.

im at 128,232 and ive had a few alternator replacement new strurts front and rear sway bar endlinks. that has been all besides oil changes and going on my 2nd set of tires. overall the pat is reilable and never left me stranded or had to be towed.

A few problems I could mention on mine are, that stupid plastic piece that is on the driver seat railing, I always get my jeans caught on it, it usually ends up ripping my jeans on the leg by my ankle but it might just break the plastic soon. Also some small sun visors but i just found out that they are retractable and be extended over the side window.

I have to admit that I am personally glad to hear about the lack of mechanical issues with the car. As for the tie-rod ends that seem to be a common problem, I just want to mention that my old Volvo s40 2001 couldn't go 40,000km without needing to replace them. My wife's old Honda Accord 2000 had the same kinds of issues.

and you drive a 2014 patriot like it says in your statastics in the right hand corner?

So are the 2011+ front end more reliable?
They were revised along with many other parts. I'm 95% sure the suspension got a slight redesign to make more reliable after 2011+

I have heard 2009 was the year many of the kinks of the 07 and 08, esp front suspension issues, were worked out better.

2011 would be better, yes I would think so
