My wife has a 2011 Jeep Patriot Latitude, which we took delivery of on Jan 2, 2011. She puts approximately 18,000 miles/year on it, mostly city miles.

After the first six months the battery died. :( The dealer replaced the battery under warranty. We were unhappy that this occurred, but glad to have the battery replaced with a general minimum of downtime, though my wife lives out of her car and travels to multiple clients each and every day.

Today, about two years after the battery was replaced, she goes to pick up the Patriot from a car wash where it was being detailed. It would not start.

Should the battery fail like this after only two years given the 18k/yr mileage and mostly city driving?

Did the detailers leave her lights on, blast the stereo, etc. which drained the battery? They said that they saw acid on the terminals and to pour coke on them. I have not yet inspected the battery, but will as soon as she gets home. Does this point to battery failure?

They were able to give her a jump start, but I am greatly concerned as my wife requires no-excuses reliable transportation. We are also leaving on a trip in two days. I expect better from an only two and a half year old car.

stock batteries are usually pretty minimum,
but shouldnt go through 2 in 2 years,
have someone check alternator,
can also try checking yourself, with car running, disconnect battery,
car should continue running on its own without battery,
if it stalls, alt is not putting out enough voltage.
if you have a voltmeter, checking volts coming out the alternator would be more accurate

Everyone should be checking their battery regularly as its hidden away.
The clamps on the cable ends are stamped out of very thin metal and once corrosion and etc begins it won't take long for the connection to become compromised at all.

I removed both clamps early on and put those red/green felt washers over the posts, re-clamped the cables and hit everything with Fluid Film.

Same year Patriot, lots of stop and go, lots of highway. I must start/stop my Pat 40 times a day...

Not a speck of terminal cancer, not a peep of electrical issues, starts on first tug always.

It's probably from them leaving the doors open while detailing and vacuuming it, maybe even playing the radio. A good 1/2 hour drive should charge it back to normal.

my last yellow top lasted nearly 8 years!

I want to try an Odyssey battery next though!

In extreme heat or cold, you never want to go cheap on a battery. If you can't get an Odyssey or Optima, get the one with the best warranty you can find.
