Have a red light flashing on my dash, right above the temp gauge. Anyone know what that means??? Thanks for any help you can give,,, and it’s a 2014 patriot 2.4

The red light by the temperature gauge is the security system light. It's supposed to turn on for a few seconds when you start the car then it should go out. It also flashes when you lock the doors from the outside.

It could be a problem with the chip in the key, or the WCM receiver. If you have another key, try it and see if there's any difference.

Was it happening before the battery change?

Just for reference, here's what the owners manual says:

"During normal operation, after placing the ignition in the
on position, the vehicle security light will turn on for three
If the light remains on after the bulb check, it indicates that there is a problem with the electronics.

In addition, if the vehicle security light begins
to flash after the bulb check, it indicates that someone used
an invalid key to try to start the engine. Either of these
conditions will result in the engine being shut off after two
seconds.

If the vehicle security light turns on during normal vehicle
operation (vehicle running for longer than ten seconds), it
indicates that there is a fault in the electronics. Should this
occur, have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible by an
authorized dealer."

If, after trying the above, the problem still persists, as Sandstone mentioned further up the responses a while back, very possible it is the WCM. Had an issue with ours less than a year old from new with very few miles on it. Dealer replaced under warranty and said they were seeing quite a few failures on the '14 & '15 models at the time, as we had to wait a few weeks for call-back, as part was on national backorder.

I’ve got a 2017 Jeep patriot sport if that makes a difference. But I was told by a few people spare keys will turn over but not slllw you to actually drive unless it’s been programmed. I bought the extra spare key for $3 give or a take from a site online based out of China 🙄 so no wonder it wasn’t working properly. The cut is great! But it came un programmed which is a bummer but hey it beats spending 250-300$ at the dealership or a locksmith to cut the ke AND progr it..now I only get to pay $120 for the programming of it instead of the full amount. 🎉 WOOHOO😑

but once I tried my normal key, the flashing red light was gone and hasn’t come back on since

It's more likely the transponder in the key or the WCM (wireless control module) that's the issue.

The WCM has an antenna ring (3) that surrounds the lock tumbler which transmits / receives signals to / from the transponder in the key.
Flipping the key over changed the orientation of the transponder to the antenna ring.
