Hello, does anybody know where to find the small sponge inside the air box? Or what I can use instead of the sponge? I got off the phone with the dealership, and unfortunately those sponges aren't sold separately only together with the housing. My old sponge was very caked in oil that when I tried removing it, it just broke apart. Needing some advice

From what I can determine, these filters only fit Patriots that take a cylindrical air filter. For those of us with flat air filters, there is a hose to a boxed-in area on the engine side of the air filter housing that seems to serve the same purpose. My second-hand 2010 Patriot didn’t have a filter there when I looked, and the whole area was very clean with no oil or other residues. I measured the dimensions of the ‘box’ at 6cm x 8cm, which is significantly larger that the filter shown at the link above. I did make a filter from open-cell foam, which I intend to replace with a known oil resistant foam when I get the chance.

Also - the parts diagrams that I have found online for the air filter on my Patriot do not show any filter of this type.

Hope this helps someone. I took off the engine air filter and removed the sponge from the Crankcase Ventilation. (There is a small hose that supplies Crankcase gas vapor into the air inlet box.)
The sponge is circled in red.

Then I just took the sponge out, cleaned it in gasoline, and sprayed "Air Filter Oil K&N" on it. Replaced the sponge, and you are done!

I also replaced the cylindrical filter as shown. (it's a friction fit)

I noticed this sponge today while changing my air filter....were you able to find a new one? you cleaned it in what kind of gasoline and why gasoline?....also, why would the crank case want to supply some vapor to the air intake?

Hey! The positive crankcase ventilation return line, is the small 1/2" rubber hose that goes into the air box - the other line being the fresh air intake (used for combustion). The crankcase gasses are captured by the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve, back into the engine's intake, essentially returning the crankcase gasses back to be burned during combustion.

The reason this is done is that not all fuel is burned during combustion, leaving behind crankcase gasses. These gasses are reintroduced into the engine to be burned, instead of existing to the atmosphere.

It's my understanding this yellow sponge acts as a filter.
My dad helped me clean it with regular gasoline 88-unleaded gasoline. He said kerosene works well also.

I was not able to find a new one no, I believe it comes with the Air Box part tho.

Hope this helps, sorry for the late reply!

I've been replacing my air filter today and also noticed this amount of oil (photo attached). I haven't replaced the filter and cleaned the air filter box for almost a year and a half. Should I worry (PCV valve issue?), or is this amount acceptable?

I have the stock PCV valve.(Jeep Patriot 2017, the car's mileage is approximately 100,000 miles).

Thank you for any feedback/suggestions.
