2016 Jeep Patriot - Disconnected/Reconnected the Two PCM Cables and Car Won’t Start

Hi Jeep Patriot Forum,

Background: I recently replaced the Crankshaft Rotation Sensor on my 2016 Jeep Patriot. In doing so, I disconnected the 2 large PCM cables with red clips on top of the air cleaner (see screenshot) so I could remove the air cleaner and get my hands in to replace the sensor at the back of the motor. I also never disconnected a battery terminal during this fix. After putting everything back together and reconnecting the PCM cables, the car now won’t start. It just cranks. And, ODB is reading 13 new error codes.

Question: does disconnecting and reconnecting the PCM cables cause an issue with the electrical system that requires some type of reset? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the site.

You should always disconnect the negative battery cable before disconnecting and reconnecting the PCM, otherwise damage to the PCM circuitry can result.

Try disconnecting both battery cables, touching them together and leaving them for about 10 minutes, then reconnect and hope that everything resets.

Yep, does a full discharge of any residual power stored in capacitors and resets the pcm and tipm. Some folks will use a zip tie to hold them together so they don't have to stand there and wait.

Check all the fuses, see if any are blown.

Sometimes the PCM connectors don't seat properly or a pin gets bent.
Disconnect the battery, as before touch the battery cables together to drain the system, and check to make sure.

What error codes are being thrown?

Well... Car fired up! Thanks, Sandstone! I disconnected the battery cables, disconnected the PCM connectors, checked that none of the pins were bent (none were), reconnected the PCM cables, touched the positive and negative cables together for about 10 minutes. It started right up!! Glad I found this forum. Hugely valuable. Thanks again.

Fuel, air and spark are your next tests. The easiest one being fuel, pull off the air cleaner hose and spray some starting, brake clean or carb cleaner fluid, or gas if you have some down it and see if it runs or sputters. Maybe the fuel pump fuse blew?

Ok so initially my 2016 jeep Patriot sport 2.4 L was over heating and went in limp mode ....since then I replaced the thermostat housing, the water pump, the engine oil temperature sensor, the upper radiator hose and the air temperature sensor. Currently will turn over but not start also no codes are being thrown. What could it be? A relay fuse??! Please help lol
