Hello. I have fallen in love with the Jeep Patriot, test drove acouple now,( both were flops). I live in Winnipeg MB, and there are bacically none for sale in the whole city
I found one that I've looked at, the dealership is mid to so/so. Alittle shady and I bought my last car threw them 6 years ago,
They have an overly clean kinda exactly what I want(except color) 2016 Patriot for sale, but it's got almost 170000km on it. They are asking just under 11k but I've already talked to them and if paying cash that price will go down. I would of bought it alredy if it didn't have so many miles on her. So my question would be, how much longer of a life do you think I'd generally get . I've got the car fax sent. It doesn't have the greatest service history, but have test drove and transmission shifts great, and 0 engine noise, no knocking or lifter noise ect. Doesn't have any Leakes underneath, and hardly any undercarriage rust I'm just overly worried about the milage
So thoughts would help, thanks tons
It's the 2016, 4*4. Fully loaded, north edition 2.4engine

Welcome @loduklodge! If it's only the mileage you're worried about, I think you're ok. That's still no reason to pay the asking price, however.

I've had two Patriots with over 500,000 total miles. My 2008 Patriot went to 300,000+. The CVT transmission was the only weak point, and by 2016 I don't think Jeep was using the CVT anymore (unless yours has the FD2 package). You've already checked for rust -- some (not all) Patriots in the early years had a problem with rusty sub-frames, but the frames on both my 2008 and my present 2014 have been fine. I'm in New England and they're genrous with the road salt here, so if I was going to have a problem, I would have had it by now.

My 2014 is currently at 215,000 miles and SFSG. Neither Patriot has burned a drop of oil, nor has either leaked at all. These have very durable engines.

If the one you're looking at has had a lot of repairs, those may be repairs you won't have to do!

The underbody has been coated one tiny piant chip on the hood, and a tiny scrape under the driver wheelwell. Other that that wow she is clean.

Could some of you also post on what I should be looking for, I know with my old f150 when in 4*4 turning would be 'choppy' how can I tell the 4x4 works? Any noises I should be listening for? Anything I should focus in on? Smelling the tranny fluid/oil? Just some tips would be great. Thanks

Some suggestions:

Use the VIN to get a copy of the factory build sheet to verify factory options.

You didn't mention which transmission.

If it's the FDII Off Road model it has the CVT and will need the fluid and both filters changed every 30-50k. I've seen similar recommendations for the 6 speed automatic.

If it's the manual 5 speed, you should be aware of the issues with input shaft bearings.

It doesn't have a transfer case, it's a electric clutch activated AWD so it won't bind on hard dry surfaces. If you put it on a lift or jack stands you can see the rear wheels turn.

Get a copy of jscan, alfaobd or equiv. scan tool, and check for any code history.

Listen for any clunking on acceleration, clicking, humming, grinding, or vibration when driving and while turning. If it hesitates on acceleration it could be due to needing plugs; factory style plugs are only good for 30k miles.

Check the struts for leaking. Give the suspension the bounce test, and listen for creaking / clunking. Check for uneven tire wear.

Check the sub frames to make sure they aren't rusty or have been painted over.

Turn the a/c on and see if both radiator fans come on, check to make sure and the a/c and heater works and the different vent positions and recirc mode works. See if the blower fan makes any noise.

Check the battery cables for corrosion, also how old the battery is.

Make sure all the lights work, and windows go up and down.

You should also be aware of the engine bay grounds corrosion issue:

Hope this helps..

General hints for looking at a car:
  • IMPORTANT: Always have a trusted mechanic check out any used car.
  • A used vehicle is not new. It's had 9 years of wear and you will have repairs. That is normal. There is almost always going to be something you have to fix soon. That's why the last owner sold it.
  • Don't come at it with stars in your eyes because the dealer will notice and won't flex on the price.
  • Don't trust anything the seller says. Especially if they promise to take care of a problem when you bring it back for your first service! If they could have fixed it already, they would have.
  • Check the quality of the fluids. Any dealer with 1/2 brain will have them changed before selling it so the fluids may not tell you much.
  • Crunching noises when turning hard to either side = front end problems.
  • Humming/howling noises when driving = wheel bearings. (Keep in mind that snow tires naturally hum)
  • Tire wear: cupped or worn to one side could indicate bad alignment, bad wheel bearings, or bad ball joints. Check tires all the way around because rotation may have moved a bad tire to somewhere else on the vehicle.
  • Also, check for shaking in the steering wheel. I could be nothing more than tires out of balance.
  • In general front end repairs aren't terribly expensive.
On a Patriot,
  • Definitely check for subframe rust. Most are fine, but it's smart to be sure. Repair could run $1500-2000. Not outrageous, but not cheap either. @Spirit of 76 made a good suggestion about keeping some money aside for the inevitable.
  • Most likely you have the regular automatic transmission. However, as I said in my previous post, and @Sandstone affirmed, if you have the CVT transmission it is a potential weak point. Yours is young enough that a prompt fluid & filter change will avoid any problems. At $400 it costs more than most cars, but far cheaper than a replacement. If you're good mechanically, it is a potential DIY. There are threads on here about that. Personally, I had the dealer do it.
On the bright side:
  • Patriots are relatively inexpensive to repair. Even things like the sub-frame -- and most didn't have the rust problem.
  • If driven easy, they are quite good on fuel economy. However, it is not a racing car, so don't drive it like one.
  • Patriots offer a good balance between space and fuel economy, and they're great in the snow.
  • This website is a good place for info and advice. We've got a very helpful bunch on here.
Finally, don't be discouraged by a few early repairs. On any vehicle after 100,000 miles repairs are normal and expected. After that you will have a pretty good grip on the vehicle and it will probably serve you well for another 100,000 miles. As I said above, my 2014 Patriot made it almost to 200,000 miles before any major repairs, and very few minor ones -- just tie rods, IIRC. I recently replaced my 5-spd manual tranny because I think my Patriot is good for another 100,000 miles. IMHO, your Patriot seems young enough that a good checking over and a few minor repairs followed by regular maintenance should carry you for many happy miles.

Oh wow awesome thanks tons everyone. I'm completely unsure what transmission it has. The ad doesn't say, just it's the 4x4 north edition with the 2.4 engine, fully loaded . I have a fairly good poker face even tho I'm wanting a patriot I don't mind waiting for another one to come up for sale, I'll be taking it to a shop to have a 2nd opinion, rather pay 200$ then be out 10k. The tires are 100% brand new just recently put on, obviously to make her look better, and pass the safety? We stopped salting the roads here in Winnipeg about 10years ago,
With a question to turning on the AC, and watching the fans. Last week here in wpg it was -43 with the wind chill, this week is around -10. Will the AC still turn on and work when it's out cold out whyle I'm test driving.? The undercarriage looks extremely clean and very little rust, I don't own a code reader but I was going to ask the shop I take it to , to do a scan. Don't have the vin yet. I shoulda taken a picture of it when I went to look at it.
Thanks all, I do highly appreciate everything.
Luckily work is only a 7min drive away so most of my miles will be to my hunting lodge, and this 4*4 would be great for duck/deer hunting
Example of how little I drive, my 09 dodge Journey had only 188000km on it when it died and I got it with 93000km on it 7years ago. I've just always had the worst luck on vehicles, one year I went threw 3 cars , another time as I was driving home from buying one(private sale). The head gasket went. Always have had lemons why this time and now that im older ( 40yo). I'm taking my time and doing my homework

10 months ago I bought a 2016 Patriot, 4x4 2.4L with a 6-speed automatic. In very good condition.

I have already changed:
  • throttle valve.
  • intake manifold gasket
  • PCV valve
  • fuel vapor absorber valve
  • Recirculation actuator
  • Moved the relay block and replaced the relay.
  • turn switch
All that remains is to change the exhaust manifold with the catalyst. A crack appeared in it. (Long term fuel trim is greater than 10, but the MIL has not yet illuminated). I'm not even talking about bad electrical contacts. I always have Liqui Molly contact cleaner in my car.

All the “diseases” of the Jeep Patriot manifested themselves in my car.

If you know a little about fixing cars, then the Patriot is for you. You will also need a tool and a place.

p.s. Buying a used car without any problems is almost impossible.

By looking at the photo I can tell it’s the 75 anniversary edition, the emblem colours are different plus the extra door emblems are unique to the 75th. And if it’s not a stick shift, you most likely have the 6 speed automatic from Hyundai. The CVT was only offered on the FDII package for 2016. The mileage is average for the year so if everything checks out it should be a solid vehicle.

You should come down to my area if you want to buy one for a better price. These are dealer auction prices and I could have picked up similar years and mileage Patriots for around $2,000. Yes those are wholesale prices, but I cant imagine they would be much more than $5,000 on the lot.

So I bought her, now a proud jeep Patriot owner. 2016 4x4 75th anniversary edition. Woot
And wow she is awsome and tight!
Whyle I was test driving , I lined up an inspection at the local jeep dealership, only was acouple min away and had a technician go over her, back and forth and up and down , hardly any run, rocker panels are mint, subframe is mint, 100% brand new tired, front/back breaks, suspension is tight, they scanned for codes, was nothing saved or deleted ( YouTube told me shady dealers can delete codes , but then there saved as deleted). It's a 6 speed transmission, in very good condition. Engine is fine, with 0 leaks, there was 2 ppl inspecting it for me and both said it's one of the better Patriots they have seen,
The dealership was originally asking 13k, end of month special went down abit, I got her for 10300$ cash ,
Lol one he saw the envelope with fresh $100 bills I knew he'd take my offor, I did start lower but no bite, oh well..
So far drives like a dream and looking forward to getting a roof rack, for my small canoe and duck decoys, and maybe a back ladder also. Cuz that looks sweet
Thank you everyone for your help!!!!
