Use the freebies and hang on to the Mobil 1 for now.
Already done! I took it to the Dealer a 150 miles away yesterday to have them install the cruise control I already paid for and called them this morning to change the oil using the coupon. I still haven't heard whether the cruise is done as it wasn't at 4:30....

My wife mainly drives our PAT and will put maybe 5,000 (mainly city) miles on it per year. I do the oil/filter changes myself (conventional oil). Should I change the oil & filter once/year, or at 6 month intervals regardless of the low miles driven?:confused:

This indicator is linked to data on mileage and "maybe" on a timer. The date obviously comes from the computer. They can't build in parameters to the software to account for mineral vs. synthetic oils so they program based on what they are recommending. My indicator went off at around 2850 but it was damn near close to the 3 month parameter.

They may have also build in some software coding to account for driving styles as well, who knows. Wouldn't be hard to do.

Change it every 6 months if the mileage doesn't go by first.
 
My 'Change Oil' indicator goes off between 5500 and 5800 miles. So that's when I change my oil. My manual states every 6k miles MAX (no sched B). It also states that the Change Oil indicator calculates based on driving/idling conditions. I drive my 'Riot very easy so while it may see a sched b scenario every once and awhile...the PCM doesn't calculate it (too much) into the interval. I write down every change into my service booklet along with my receipts from the auto store so I'm not worried at all about the warranty. Hell, the last time I took it to the dealer, they forgot to change the oil...and it was due! (I noticed I still had a purolator filter on it about 500 miles later, when I called and asked what kind of filters they use, they said mopar only. So I said well, you messed up then and I'm on my way up now).

By the way, I use Quaker State 5w-30 and Purolator filters almost exclusively...have for years and have never had a problem (93 Saturn sold with 180k on the clock 3-4 years ago, and my brothers neighbor is still driving it).

255,000 miles and I've only used the conventional bulk oil at the dealership up until they went to synthetic blend and stopped using conventional.
My manual states to change every 6,000 but I've always done it every 5.
For those using synthetic and premium oils I do agree that they are better but they won't make your engine last any longer. I hope to get 350,000 without using synthetic and I don't think you're getting any more than that with synthetic. Simply put changing your oil regularly is what matters and conventional or synthetic blend is good enough to maximize the lifespan of your engine.
 
I agree with Pacerized for the most part. The difference between Group II+ conventional oils and Group III "synthetic" oils is marginal. And, from what I have studied, even conventional oils in the recommended 5W20 grade need some synthetic components to meet this spec..

Spend some time at the Bobistheoilguy forum if you want to educate yourself. The key advantage of synthetic is "maybe" slightly better cold weather performance and definitely longer oil change intervals. Pacerized is correct about not getting better engine longevity, better mpg, etc. with synthetic.

My opinion is that conventional oil is good to at least 5,000 miles and probably more (do oil analysis), and for those of us that want to do 6,000 mile and longer intervals use a synthetic.

With my 16 years at Bobistheoilguy, I don't think the premium boutique engine oils will yield noticeable advantages or cost effectiveness. Most over the counter, locally available oils are excellent. I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 for 6-7 thousand mile OCI's. I almost always get it on sale or $10 rebate.
 
Mobil-1 High Mileage Full synthetic. 5w20. 2500 to 3000 miles. I use the High Mileage because of the additives that help preserve the seals to prevent leaks.
Do they make a 0w20? That's what my Compass requires and it drinks more oil than my Patriot did with 10 times the miles. They say its because the new engines are designed with looser tolerances to reduce internal friction hence better fuel economy. I just want to avoid adding oil between changes on a 20,000 mile engine. Really I don't think its leaking, but darned if I know where its going. Think Mobil 1 would help? From what I've seen a thicker oil is not recommended because the oil is misted (not squirted) on the bearings and a thicker oil will not mist so I want to stick with 0w20.
 
The Jeep gets whatever cheap full synthetic is on sale every 5,000 miles.
The Benz gets Mobil1 every 10,000 miles.
