I bought this Patriot new. At 18K miles, transmission started making noise. Took it to a dealer and they replaced the transmission with new.

Now at around 39K miles, making grinding noise again whenever clutch is not depressed (neutral, 1st through 5ft gear). Took vehicle to dealer where I purchased jeep and they found odd color and metal shavings. Sent a sample to Chrysler for analysis. Came back as having oil mixed in with transmission fluid. So they won't cover the repair.

Is this a known problem for the manual Patriot? No possible way I caused this. Dealer wants between $5-8,000 to rebuild or over $9K for new transmission which seems insane.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Though I don't remember anyone here having a fluid problem like that, it does sound like the input shaft bearing might be bad, which isn't un-common.

I agree with Sandstone. However, what do the manuals have for tranny fluid? Is it something special? I thought it was just oil. Then again its been a lotta years since I've had a manual that leaked -- going back to the '70s I think.

I think $8000 is outrageous for a replacement transmission. Seems people on here are getting CVTs replaced for half that. IMHO a manual should cost less. Honestly I've not priced one (fortunately I haven't needed to) so I'll defer to anyone who has. In any event I'd get a second opinion, but I think you could let JeepCares give it a shot.
 
unless someone added oil the transmission by accident, how is this NOT covered under warranty? Obviously, something is leaking sending oil into the trains. Oil from the engine. That's part of the 5/60 power train warranty, just like the transmission. I'd be interested in seeing what the dealer's reasoning was with how the oil got in there.

I bought new in 2014 a Patriot Sport 5-speed manual. At 35k miles my transmission made the same noises with clutch pedal released. Dealer had to replace all the transmission bearings due to input shaft bearing failure. I would think bearing failure would be a thing of the past by 2017. Your problem gives me no faith that the bearings they put in my rebuilt transmission will do any better. Since then as preventative maintenance I drained and refilled their ATF+4 with Pennzoil Platinum brand making sure to service properly to full. Lots of users here report input shaft bearing failure. I suspect to increase MPG they use the thin ATF+4 but my old school reasoning says manual transmissions need a heavier base oil.

The dealer's reasoning is "outside influence". This is the dealer I bought the jeep from new, not the dealer that replaced the transmission at 13K miles. I have sent the fluid out for analysis on my dime based on a transmission expert's recommendation (small shop that will cost me half of dealer quote and guarantee 3 year, 100K miles on their rebuild).

I will let the forum know the results once I get them back.

BTW, anybody want to buy a 2017 Patriot, I may have one for sale once I get problem fixed...
 
outside influence?? what does that mean? unless you put oil that isn't supposed to go in there, in there, it's their problem. push back, hard. make them pay. Somethings telling me we don't have the whole story here. if we do, then go to another dealer or sue.

i ditched my 2013 with manual at 75k miles. i should not say ditched. it was running perfectly and i put all those miles on it myself. i did change the trans fluid using the atf+4 stuff as indicated in the manual. it did have a whine at highway speeds with gas pedal pressure and dealer could never find the issue, if there was one. I traded it out on a new 2019 mustang gt 5.0 that ticked almost out the gate. Traded that garbage in on my current 2019 tacoma 4x4 OR. I still have my 2017 patriot 4x4 with the 6 speed auto. I have more faith in that trans being that hyundai made it- hyundais are actually pretty reliable....
