Hey guys, I got a 14 Patriot, 4x4, 2.4, 6 speed auto, sport.

I had an oil leak about a month ago that I tracked down to be the oil filter. Apparently on Patriots you have to torque the filters, never heard of that before. Anyway the leaks been fixed.

Now month later I'm on a trip to KY from TX and I notice there is a pool of oil after I stop to eat (Probably build up on skid plate). My issue is with in the 600 miles I have driven I have lost a quart of oil! I'm currently at 93k so I'm still under warranty, it's currently Thanksgiving though and I can't leave my Jeep in KY.

Does anyone have any ideas where the leak is coming from?? Like is there any known issues with these leaking or should I try replacing the filter? (It's the same one I didn't torque down the first time)

I would try replacing the filter
Never know if it was damaged or missing debri in threads erc
Havent heard of any issues of oil leaks engine on pats are quite reliable
Especially fairly new pats
Oil pan can rust out but thats generally at high mileage
Mine rusted at like 9 years with 170k miles on it
Oil pan was covered under lifetime warranty

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll probably have to wait till tomorrow (holidays). I'll let you all know if that works.

Oil filter installation on the Patriot is no different than any other vehicle: tighten the filter until the gasket just makes contact, then tighten it another 3/4 to 1 turn. I agree with Terasec and you might have something unusual going on with your filter installation. Are you positive you have the correct filter? Any chance you cross threaded it? Damaged gasket or double gasket?

A quart of oil in 600 miles should show up as a massive oil hemorrhage on the engine or an oily exhaust pipe (if burning oil).

Best wishes that it is something simple.

When the old filter was removed there's a chance the old gasket stuck to the mating surface on the engine, so when you put the new filter on, it'd be a poor seal and could account for your problem. I had that happen once, so I always check to ensure the old seal is still on the old filter when I remove it. Saved me a few times after that 1st incident.

Well found the leak, looks like the rear main seal. We let it run for a bit and we see some build up where the motor and trans mate. Killed the motor to see if there was oil getting flung around from the flywheel. After turning off the motor we popped plug to the flywheel and when I suck my finger in there I got oil. Plus after turning it off the leak got worse due to the oil being tossed around the bell housing. Going to take it to the dealer when I get back since I got 100k warranty.

Just an update, they confirmed the oil leak and are covering it under warranty. They also found they need to replace 3 motor mounts due to a vibration I was having. Lastly replacing the passenger side CV axle due to it leaking grease.

Well everyone just got the Patriot back and everything seems to be fine. I also had then look at this amount vibration I had when at a stop in drive. The ended up replacing the rear main seal, all 3 motor mounts, the transmission mount, and lastly they found my CV boot was leaking and replaced that too. Everything is good now at 95k!

Well **** that damn dealership! Took my Jeep off roading for the first time since I got it back and they didn't tighten down the dam intake tube on the intake manifold! Now my Jeep is hydro locked for going through a mud hole! After all the times I've taken that thing off the road I've never had anything like this happen!

Oh no! That is very bad news. :frown2: My heart goes out to you.

I wish you luck getting any help from the dealer. They might have fixed the intake tube if you'd spotted it ahead of time, but as for the hydrolocked engine, I doubt they'll do anything for you. Its been two months. They're gonna say a lot can happen in two months. You can try, but its a he said/she said kinda thing. I'd even bet there's a disclaimer in the warranty about off-roading, four-wheeling, or fording deep water.

Really too bad after you had things all fixed up.

As much as I love my dealer, I admit they have made mistakes. Nothing that critical however.

Final update! Got everything resolved after 3 months. Required me to threaten them with a small claims lawsuit and they gave in and gave me a new motor. The part that either a: got disconnected while offroading or b: was never connected/checked was the inlet tube to the throttle body. The technician told the service director they didn't need to remove that part to replace my rear main seal, even though per the service manual from the manufacturer says you need to. At that point they tried to play it off that he was a veteran and he knew ways to get the work done faster. They offered me half of the repair bill after that. I left because they needed to talk to their general manager to look over things. At which point I called and informed them that I would be pursuing them in small claims court for the damages since they would only cover half. Since they admitted the technician toom a short cut on the part that failed and didn't follow the service manual. I got a call back about 30 minutes informing me to get my vehicle since I was pursuing legal action and told them I would get it the next day (it was like 4:00pm). I then again get another call about a hour later saying the general manager has decided to cover all damages due to the technicians negligence.
