Hi I have the same problems with my 2013 Patriot Latitude. But I have many lights on my ETC, ESC, and check engine lights are on and its giving off a P2173 code "Throttle Actuator Control System - High Airflow Detected" . Now the shop i took it to said no vaccume leaks that it was most likely a bad MAP sensor so that was replaced but now 2 days later same problems.. someone please HELP
Hi Jeremy,

Was a certified Jeep dealership servicing your vehicle? If so, please feel free to send your VIN over in a private message and we can look in to this further for you.

I have a 2013 Jeep Patriot with 5 speed manual transition and I'm having the same problem. I'll shift and accelerate and the car will start bucking and not pick up speed and the ETC warning light comes on. I have to slow down and give it gas slowly to get it to stop doing it. I've read a lot of comments on here and other sites about this being a problem with the Jeep Patriot. I have an appointment on Monday to bring it to the Dealership that I bought it from and I was hoping it wasn't something serious that is going to cost me a lot to fix! Has anyone actually had to have it fixed or the throttle body replaced? I was thinking about trading this one in for a Jeep Compass for awhile now, but now I'm concerned that since these are basically the same car am I going to have this issue with the Compass as well?

Gyd62,

Was your Jeep dealership able to diagnose the concerns you've mentioned here?

ETC "Limp Mode" Throttle Body Issue

I am wondering if there is any class action suits, or anything of the like for this issue. Seems to be an issue with Jeep Patriots, stemming all the way back to 2008. I have a 2014 and just started to have this lights come on out of now where one day. The O'Reilly's reader gave the code U0401, which they could not read. Took it in to a dealer, and the following stored codes pulled up:

U040100
C121C
U0401
P2101
P2110
P2112

My jeep has about 86,4xx miles on it, so outside of the bumper to bumper warranty. I bought this jeep just over a year ago from an authorized jeep dealer. They say the power train warranty does not cover any of the issues- even though VERY obviously, the transmission is affected. Jeep has obviously ignored this issue, and should be held accountable. Has anyone else thought the same thing? 8 years of a reoccurring problem in your vehicles- that of which can be a danger if driving on the highway- seems negligent in my book.

Hello all!

I've been dealing with the same issue for about a month now. Replaced my air filter along with my O2 sensor. The lights went off for a few days then came back on again. I'm really trying to hold off a trip to the dealership (I called and they automatically charge $138 just for a diagnostics test). I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot that a purchased new from a Jeep dealership with only ~46,000 miles on it. For those who purchased Jeeps more recently, have you found a solution?

Add me to the list of people having this problem. 2014 Latitude, 2.4, 6-speed auto, 52,000 miles. Drove the car Tuesday night, everything normal. Wednesday morning started it up, all the warning lights lit up, car in limp mode, etc. Code P2173. I have a great mechanic, and he’s had the car for 2 days without any luck. I’m supposed to go on a 1,000 mile trip on Monday and I’m terrified I’m going to get stranded in the middle of nowhere. This car has been super reliable, and now after reading all of these comments in this thread, I don’t trust it.

Any verdict?

The code said I had a large vacuum leak. A smoke test revealed the gasket on the oil filler cap was leaking severely. A new cap seems to have solved the problem. No idea why that set off all of the warning lights. The mechanic did say that if it happened again he was going to replace the throttle body.
Thanks. I'd be interested to hear if it happens again, and if replacing the throttle body fixes the problem.

I am getting my jeep looked at on the 30th to get the recall done but also get the ETC light problems I have been having taken care of. It will buck like a bronco and the ETC light will come on and off and on and off. It only happens it seems on less than half a tank of gas. Lucky for me its still under the powertrain warrenty so might as well get it done.

Let us know what they find.

I purchased my 2014 Jeep Patriot Sport 2wd back in June of this year, Currently has 38,500. About a month ago I had it studder as I pulled off from a stop sign and the ETC and Trac lights came on and right back off. It drove okay after that but I went ahead and had it checked by my mechanic who said that it had thrown an error code for the Throttle Body. I went ahead and had it replaced.

The same day I got it back, it threw me into limp mode, ETC Trac and Check Engine this time. Pulled over, turned it off and back on to get it out of Limp mode and the Check Engine Light stayed on. Error code this time was P2173 High Airflow.

Mechanic kept it for a week trying to track down a vacuum leak, but did not find anything. Reset it and I drove it around for a couple of days before it happened all over again, same warning lights, same Error Code. Was advised to take it to the Jeep Dealership at that point.

Took it in the following Monday 10/9, was called and told my Throttle Body needed to be cleaned ( I had just had it replaced the week before ), they went back to searching and called me to tell me that the PCV Valve had failed and leaked oil into the intake manifold and ruined the MAP Sensor there. Had them Replace the MAP Sensor and the PCV Valve, and Flash the Computer since I'd read that it sometimes fixed the issue, drove it home that evening, very next morning ( 10/13 ) same -EXACT- problem happened on the way to work, trac, ETC, and Check Engine.

Took it back immediately on 10/13 and left it for 3 more days with the Jeep Dealership. Just got it back after they replaced the Exhaust Manifold. ( 10/18 ) (Thankfully still covered under warranty.)

Update: 10/18 - Managed to get it home and on my way back out of the driveway Limp Mode, ETC, & Check Engine again. Took it to Advanced to see what the engine code was this time: Once more a P2173 .

10/19 - Drove it to my office this morning, check engine light was gone, but Lo Tire Light was on. Going to check the air pressure (is getting colder outside in the mornings) and take it back to the Dealership after awhile. / Update/ Added air to the tires and the Lo Tire Light went out, Limp Mode/ Check Engine Light Came back on about 2 miles after that. Left it with the Dealership again.

10/26 - Update: Dealership Replaced the PCM Module under warranty and assured me that fixed the problem. Picked the Jeep up, made it a mile down the road, once again Limp Mode, ETC, and Check Engine again. Took it back, left it with them.

11/2 - Update: Got the Jeep back this time, turns out it was the Throttle Body. Yes it had been replaced new at the very beginning of all of this but was defective. They replaced it with yet another one, and it drove fine after that. However, this experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth as far as trustworthiness of this vehicle and I traded it in yesterday. It's a shame, very nice looking small size suv, but when you have zero faith in it, it ruins the whole experience.

I have a feeling that the fuel pump might be going out leading to the ETC light going on. I won't find out till the 30th when I take it to the dealership. Hopefully they will figure it out or at least be able to replicate the issue. It seems to be becoming more common. I am still able for the most part drive the jeep since it only happens once in a while.

Any one else have updates on what they're going through with theirs?
No update, but I have experienced this problem. I have a Sport 5 spd, with about 68,000 miles.

Last Saturday (10/14), I was about 5 minutes into a trip, slowing to a stop light, when the ETC and traction control lights came on, the car went into limp mode, and threw code P2173. I tried re-starting the car twice, but still stayed in limp mode. I limped home, read the code, and looked for any obvious problems. Then I tried starting the car again, and it ran normal. It's been running normal since.

I recalled the same thing happened several months back - slowing to a light, ETC and traction lights came on, limp mode, code P2173. That time, I pulled into a parking lot, and after shutting the car off, and starting it 3 times, it ran normal.

In searching about that code (high airflow), I read it usually indicates a vacuum leak, most likely the intake manifold. I didn't see any obvious places for a leak, though I didn't do any testing (like a smoke test). And if the problem was being caused by a vacuum leak, I would think it would be there all the time.

Lately I have noticed the problem, of, when tramping on the gas, the car hesitates, mostly like caused by something with the throttle body. Cleaning the throttle body hasn't seemed to help. I thought the limp mode problem might be related to the throttle body. But I have seen some old posts here, in addition to yours, where replacing the throttle body didn't fix the limp mode problem. I was also thinking it might be an intermittent bad signal from one of the sensors, like the MAP sensor. But, again, your experience would seem to rule that out. Maybe it's one of the throttle position sensors?
