Thinking of buying Patriot

From Colorado--

Thinking about buying a certified 2016 Patriot with 18000 miles. Would like to hear from current owners who have high miles (75000 plus) about what their vehicle is like with high miles and what repairs have been done. I usually keep a vehicle about 10 yrs. No off roading, maybe a few trips to neighboring states, and probably a fair amount of miles going into mountains to ski, hike, etc. etc. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks--

Greg

The only advice I have is if you want a 16 go ahead and get a new one. With all the incentives you'll most likely get one just as cheap as a used one.

Sorry, mine is a 12 but only has 30k miles....but all I've done to it is change oil and filters so far....no other problems. And it's a rebuilt title so you might think I'd have had a problem or two.....I've had it almost 3 years and put 21k miles on it during that time.

I would definitely check the price of some new Patriots if you can find one equipped like you want it. You can go to the "Jeep Home Page" and check stock on their website around your area.

Here is an example of one maybe in your area to give you an idea of what a new one would cost--pretty much equipped like my 2015 (described on my signature) and I am thinking that even their bottom price is probably higher than you could actually get if you talked to the right dealership--not trying to tell you what to do--just wanting to give you information. (by the way, I am in SC and never heard of this dealership so just giving an example)

I'm at 226,000 miles. I fully intend to get beyond 250,000. Its crossed my mind to get a new Patriot while they're still making them, but on the other hand, if mine is running so well, why bother? I can do a lot of repairs for the price of a new one.

Only major problem was the transmission (replaced under warranty, no problem).
Only other major problem was the engine harness at 190,000. That was $1200 parts & labor. The short-circuit ran down the battery so many times it died, and also burned out the alternator. Again, at that kind of mileage something is going to break. Dealer covered the battery.
I've done very little front-end work and nothing premature. (I mention that because a lot of Patriot owners have had problems with ball joints dying young).
Still on original springs and shocks and I've drive on some pretty trashy roads. (Happily the worst two were resurfaced this year. :) )
I'm still on my first set of replacement brakes! Still on original catcon and exhaust system.
Really my repair list is hardly a list at all.

Oh, sunroofs are notorious leakers. Not all of them, but enough that there are a couple threads on here about that.
I don't have a sunroof so I've obviously not had the problem.

Overall I'm impressed with my Patriot. Really can't say enough good things about it. :smiley_thumbs_up:
With FWD its quite capable in snow -- that's why I got it -- and I admit do challenge it, but I've never been stranded or stuck. I even took on a really bad road last winter just to prove a point and it did just fine. I keep good snow tires on it.
Fuel economy is marvelous: +/-30mpg overall

We like it so much we added a 2014 Patriot to the stable. That has 45,000 miles on it and so far no problems. Consistently in the low 30s mpg. It goes in for state inspection tomorrow so my fingers are crossed.

How much is that Certified Patriot? I'd just buy a brand new one if I were you even if it means buying a lower trim level like a Sport. We only paid $17k for our brand new Patriot Sport. It has 4x4, AC, automatic tranny, cruise, AM/FM/CD with ipod hookup. It's a simple vehicle -- manual windows/locks/mirrors -- less stuff to break/stop working.

Also, when you are the original buyer you can buy the Lifetime Chrysler/Mopar bumper to bumper service contract ($50 or $100 deductible per repair). You can buy it online at certain Chrysler dealerships for $2,200. You can negotiate it down and buy it at your dealership. If they won't play ball, you can buy it online. I don't think buying a Certified one allows you to buy that MaxCare lifetime warranty.

Also, I'd get the regular 6 speed automatic and not the CVT though we have members who love their CVT's and haven't had trouble with them.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. The certified vehicle I'm looking at is $17898 for a Sport w/AC and power windows and 18k miles. Have noticed that new ones here in Denver are a little more $$. Just need to make up my mind. It's either this our a Subaru Outback.

Is that Certified one even 4x4? Definitely want a 4x4 in Colorado. Also, I'd definitely go new if I were you. You can probably find a new one for the same or just a little more.

For some, power windows are a must, but I think manual windows kinda keeps with the basic spirit of the Patriot -- practical boxy 4x4. Also, I'd get the regular 6 speed AT and not the CVT.

There's a brand new Patriot in Latitude trim for $21,500 and it has AC, 6 speed automatic, 4x4, alloy wheels, cruise, power everything. Or they have Sport 4x4's for $19k at some other Denver dealers -- with 6 speed AT, AC. Couple grand more than that Certified one would only add like $20 more per month.

You could probably even get it for less if you haggle/threaten to leave.

I was looking at a used certified and found jeep patriot Sport 4x4 2016 around 20.000 miles $ 17,500 (and they were all coming from rental Place) after talk to the seller he looked at the computer and told me if you want to buy Brand new was around $ 20,000 + Tax.....
I started looking at other authorized JEEP dealer, I stopped and talked to another seller after checking the prices they had on the website,And after looking around, he made me a quote Jeep Patriot Latitude 4x4 (2.4l, 6 Speed Automatic) with alloy wheels with bigger tires, adjustable driver's seat, heated seats and remote starter, all this was not in the Patriot Sport..... (Out the door $ 22.300)

Yeah I definitely wouldn't want to buy a previous rental. Rental cars are used and abused, and I'd assume they weren't maintained well. I used to work for Alamo Car Rental, and our cars never missed their oil changes but I wouldn't want to risk it. Seems like a lot of these modern day car rental places are ran by 20 something sales people.

18k miles is high ?!?!?!? High for a bicycle, maybe. 18,000 is only 1/2 way through the shortest of warranty periods. If you're getting repairs at that kind of mileage, you've got a lemon! You should go double the warranty period before anything goes wrong. I did nothing to mine before 100,000 and that was just a brake job.

Agreed however regarding the price compared to a new one. If a new one is that close on price, why worry about why the previous owner dumped it so young? Maybe that particular Patriot will have problems early on.

I would research into getting a new patriot, looking for the incentives.

I have an 2012 I bought in 2015, and just took put 1,000 miles on mine visiting my sister and back. Also at times going 80 mph, caught myself going 90, on the highway, everyone was driving that speed (west tn to macon Ga)

Ive had some minor issues at the beginning, not any recently. Great look, great gas economy, rommie, and most of all best bang for the $ suv/cuv around

the 2017 compass looks okay-its more computerized which this is where the price is increased a lot. Id rather have it simple with the patriot and of course, I still prefer the classic boxy look of the patriot all day. I did get into a renegade driver seat-still a somewhat boxy vehicle. Again, I still prefer the Patriot. Nothing right now can beat the price of the patriot

Interest rates are lower on new ones than used as well, your monthly payment might even be lower for the new. Right now they are moving inventory, so you can usually find low rates for new vehicles. If you're paying cash, not an issue.

My 08 went over 150K miles, but I only have 15K on the 14.
