It’s a Dodge Caliber festooned with a seven slot grille and boxy proportions. It exists for no other reason than to leverage the brand equity built up by decades of Jeep heritage. The Patriot*, according to your nominations, our writers, and your votes is — by far — TTAC’s 2016 Worst Automobile Today.
These Are TTAC's 2016 Ten Worst Automobiles Today

I researched SUVs nearly 2 years before my spring 2013 (LOL, 2014 model year) purchase....waited for the 6 speed auto to come out.
In my own mind, I debunked the magazine trash talk. At 40,000 miles I have no buyer's remorse, and my debt free life is kind of nice. When crossing the Canadian border, reaching back to UNROLL the back window, the guard's chuckle "they still make roll down windows?" gave me immense pleasure.

LOL, I might have to get out my bell bottom jeans to elicit even more gawks while driving my Pat. That article pleases my eccentric ways. I'm so delighted!

I guess we can all laugh on our way to the bank. If you can manage to read (between the lines) all of the article's comments, the truth about the Patriot AND it's haters is very obvious: The "new" Patriot is a decent vehicle considering its price, not to be judged on its initial crappiness. The haters hate anything not "in" - end of story.

Igster, you ROCK! Thanks for this gem!

all for constructive criticism,
but article doesnt state why,
when i purchased my 07, i paid $21k for FDII 4x4, it suited me for what i intended perfectly, daily driver with some offroading
there was no other 4x4 in the price range at the time, nearest 4x4 was +$25k

as for the criticism of x6 m
design of sloping back is more of personal preferance than anything else
i wouldnt use such to put it on a worst list when it has a 567hp v8
guess they prefer the 1.4 ltr engines other cars are using,

I would like to hear their warrants. Whether an article praises or disses a product, I always like to hear their reasoning..

Jeeps are unrefined period. I bought a bare bones Compass with 6at and I have no regrets. TTAC gets paid by auto companies to slander cars like the Mks. What vehicle out there used resells faster than the MKs. None. Patriot was awarded a while back as fastest vehicle resold in the USA. I think it was 24 day average time in lots which is fast.

Exactly why I bought a Patriot. It is unrefined compared to the competition. I like the retro look and the simplicity. Others, including auto journalists, put more value on infotainment systems and numerous driver's aids to protect them while they play with their smart phones. Also, these reviews invariably focus on automatic/cvt owners (which are the vast majority) so they don't influence my purchases. Driving a manual is a completely different experience.

That review is nothing more than a cynical writer looking for a place to vent some clever snarlies. That's why there are no facts to back it up. I wonder if that writer has a vehicle that can go 200,000 trouble-free miles? I doubt it.

The Jeep Patriot is likely the best buy on the market today. Its not hard to spend twice as much and get something that's almost as good.

Can't argue with you on this one. I lurked here a full year before joining and noticed the Subaru-like cult following. It made it difficult to assess the threads regarding reliability and caused me to dig very deep into many sources. It's very tough to ignore nearly all of the negative magazine reviews and still part with one's money for a Jeep. At my purchase time, the Forester oil consumption issue was flaming, the new Ford Escape was literally flaming (engine and many other recalls), and Honda would not budge on CRV pricing. Back then, I couldn't understand why the rags put the Forester on top without a mention of the serious oil consumption issue. Only time will tell if my Patriot ownership pleasure ends on a good note. The toughest part, for me, is dealing with the stigma surrounding the Patriot. But, not too tough. I try to "invest" as little as possible in depreciating assets, while at the same time enjoy a well maintained reliable ride. A-O-K, so far.

I had a '98 Grand Cherokee with 225,000 miles on it, and it died on me. I had been researching compact SUV's for a while, and yes there are a lot of options that may give you more bang for the buck, but I decided after all to just stick with Jeep. March 31st 2015 I walked into Garden City Chrysler and bought my 2015 Patriot Altitude.

Yes, all of the websites say to get a Ford Escape, or a Honda CRV, but I'm also big on aesthetic, and personally, I cannot drive something that looks like a big egg shaped shuttle craft out of a sci-fi movie. The Patriot still looks like a Jeep. Like a truck. It looks rugged, and I love looking at it every single day when I'm first unlocking those doors.

It's basic, no bluetooth, no Nav system, no excessive amount of 12v charger ports, no satellite radio, but dammit, it's still perfect for me! NYC had some brutal snow this winter, and I drove home from the city at 4am in the middle of a blizzard with my 4 wheel drive, and made it back to Queens nice and smooth...

I've got a nice Garmin, and an iPhone, so who needs a Nav? You can buy a bluetooth earpiece, so who needs a bluetooth? Heated seats? Nah, I've got cloth seats and the heat works great... Heated steering wheel? nah, i've got nice winter gloves. And again the heat works great... So a year later, no troubles, no issues...I'm up to 12,000 miles and it's still looks as new as the day i brought it home...

The Patriot may not be the trendiest, or the best value ever, but it's perfect for me...and I love mine.

Hope this helps!

I've had a lot of problems with my 09 Pat that I've outlined in other threads so the only advice I would give to someone who wants to buy a Jeep Pat (or maybe, at this point, any Jeep whatsoever) is also buy the best, most comprehensive and longest extended warranty you can afford.

While I've had a lot of expensive problems, I still kinda like my Jeep and hope everyday I am over the hump of my share of problems and will have several carefree years ahead of me with it...

2010, 4x4, CVT, 90,000 miles, couldn't be happier. Couple slight issues, but nothing that can't be fixed with friends and food. :D

Articles like this have been around since the very beginning. I bought my first Patriot back in Feb '07 and there were plenty of articles ragging on it then... and has been pretty steady since. I suspect that there will continue to be negative articles even after FCA ceases production of them. I would not be surprised to see a video documentary on how the Patriot was the all-time worst vehicle to wear the "Jeep" name.

I never got why there was so much hate heaped on the Patriot, but I find it odd that the same people who trashed the Patriot in articles fell over themselves in praising the Renegade... which suffers from the same "issues" (and more) that the Patriot did that caused them to diss the Patriot in the first place.

I've had a great run with my '07 Patriot (which is now my daughter-in-law's daily driver) and my '15 Patriot is carrying on in that tradition. But that's my first-hand experience. I don't want to invalidate the experiences of those who differ from mine.

The person who generated the list is a douche bag who's probably never even driven a Patriot/Compass. There are some really good cars on that list of what he thinks are the worst cars.

The Patriot is a super practical vehicle -- boxy, roomy, great in the snow, bread and butter 2.0/2.4 4 banger world engine that's reliable and long lasting if maintained.

The knuckleheads who don't like the Patriot/Compass always say things like "a REAL Jeep is a Wrangler Rubicon or an Army Jeep!" -- too ignorant to realize that Jeep has had regular civilian vehicles in their lineup for 60 years. The Willys wagon, Cherokee, Wagoneer, etc.. A Subaru nuthugger once told me: "My Legacy Outback wagon is 4x more off-road worthy than ANY Patriot!" He, a stranger, said this as he was walking by me. We were parked in a lot with the Patriot, and he pulled up in his Subaru and said that as he walked by.

Um, ok, buddy you honestly think a Subie Outback is 4 times more off-road worthy than a Freedom Drive 2 Patriot? That is just ignorance. They're at least the same, but I'd put my money on the FD2 Pat in a head to head off-road test.

First Pat I ever drove was my mother's 2014 granite crystal Sport FD1. She moved to a small town with a Jeep/Dodge dealership, and she needed an SUV due to her bad hips. We were out driving in the woods and there were some seriously rutted roads that a car would NEVER be comfortable on (without being damaged), but I just pushed the "4x4 Low" button and it went through those roads with no trouble.

Igster talking about "settling" for jeep patriot . Im happy to settle for a vehicle that is about half the cost of what another manufacturer would charge. I got myself a great deal

I knew what I was buying.
by far the most important thing said in this whole thread. I think that some of the negative sentiments I've read here come from somebody who didn't know what they were buying and had the wrong expectations.

Have you ever told somebody you were going to give them milk, but without them seeing what you are giving them, gave them O.J. in stead? It will make people puke.

O.J. is amazing and in some ways far better than milk, However, if you are expecting one thing, and get something else, it can leave a bad taste in your mouth, despite the qualities of the product.

Is there a lemon here and there? sure, but that's with ALL vehicles from ALL makes. Period. That's why they sell them with warranties and there are lemon laws (at least in the US). so you can fix the issues.

anyways, anybody who is realistic about it, the patriot is a great value for the money for a 4x4/awd vehicle. I don't think there is another one that can come close to it on price. There was a suzuki that could, but it is no longer sold in the US. It can fit 4 adults, or 2 and 3 kids easily (I've done that plenty) and it can carry a bunch of cargo, it was by far the easiest car to get our kids strollers in and out of. and it gets OK gas mileage (to get better you have to spend a lot more $$ and you can buy a lot of gas for that extra $$)

anyways. I think most of the reviews are unfair to the patriot, as they put it up against cars costs thousands more, and are much newer platforms. however it is dated, and there are better cars on the market (but not for the money). Set the correct expectations, and you'll be set.

just for example, the hyundai tucson (which I think somebody mentioned replacing their patriot with) for a base 2.0l (same world engine platform as the patriot) with the same 6 speed auto and 4x4, STARTS at 4k more than the patriot, before taking any incentives into account. once you do that its as high as a 9K difference in price. you can almost buy a whole other brand new car for the price difference between the two entry level awd cars with basically the same drive train. and if you were to go with the 1.6l turbo (similar horse power to the patriot) then you could buy a chevy spark or nissan virsa for the price difference between the two. So yeah, I sure as heck hope that the tucson is a nicer car than the patriot (which it is not) for that kind of money.

Patriot is going back to the bank on Monday. I couldn't be happier. So long you piece of crap. I would rather drive a 12 year old pickup truck than this piece of crap. Good riddance. You can all enjoy your dodge garbage, with no resale value and not even close to anything that can 4x4 with anything out there. Bucket of bolts. Ranks right up there with their fricken' K-Cars. Good riddance Patriot. Worst mistake of my life. God knows I'm going to pay for it, but I know it was the worst choice I made. If you are thinking about buying a Patriot. Run you crazy bastard. Run and never look back.

30k for a stripped down truck maybe. Trucks are expensive. Igster shuda waited for Wrangler days. There's a Chrysler dealership near Akron that advertizes new low end Wrangler's for 21k. They are on I76 west of Akron. Big Dealer too they have a huge digital billboard in front of property. That's what he shuda bought. Patriots are good snow runners not rock hoppers. He bought the wrong vehicle.

There's a Chrysler dealership near Akron that advertizes new low end Wrangler's for 21k.
Those are called ad cars
Used to lure buyers in
They dont actually sell ad cars
I was looking for a wrangler unlimited for under $30k for 1-2 yrs
Build price online was $28k-$29k
Every dealer swore they had one until i walked in the door
All the unlimiteds were +$35k regardless of ads

wait, he's giving it up as a repo? I thought he was trading it in or something. He's going to TRASH his credit! That's not smart at all.... I mean if he plans on buying a car again on credit any time soon. You would be MUCH better off trading it in and taking the hit with the negative equity. you'll pay that much and then some with either a HUGE interest rate or buy a much lower end used car.

You would be MUCH better off dumping as much money into it to bring it down to a private party value, and then sell it private. That's what I did and actually got more for it than I expected. yeah, you put a bunch of money into a car you are getting rid of. but its way better than killing your credit, or having a huge negative equity on your next car... Patriot actually holds it value pretty well, so unless you rolled in a ton of negative equity into your patriot, it actually shouldn't be too bad in getting it down to private party.

Looking at your post history you've not been smart with your car buying, you did roll a bunch of negative equity into your patriot with your journey. if you were paying as much as your wife was paying for her wrangler for your patriot, because of the negative equity, yeah I could understand being frustrated. so it seems like my suggestion of selling it private party would give you the best outcome. Sell it and buy a cheap $1-2000 car (plenty out there, I just bought one myself) for cash, and drive that for a year or two while you save up money to buy a nicer car with cash.

Don't make rash decisions, and think a little more about the situation, and the consequences your decisions will have. Its something that I'm working with with my children. Trying to teach them that every decision has a consequence, good or bad, and that by first considering what those consequences will be, they will be much happier in the long run.

No choice. I live in Alberta Canada. We are in a financial downturn due to oil taking a dive. My credit is already ruined anyway. To me, this is a good thing overall as I don't have to deal with this car I hate anymore.

If I could trade it in, I would, but kind of hard to do so with so much owing on it and the fact I don't have a job. Now is the perfect time to simply walk away from something I don't want anyway. The bailiff is picking it up tomorrow. That's all she wrote. I'm sure many will be happy to not hear me bitch about this thing I hate anymore anyway.

Life is taking some unexpected turns, but I know for a fact I will NEVER buy anything like this vehicle again. Worst excuse for a 4x4 there ever was. Cheaply built and brutal resale value. But then again, that's not going to be my problem anymore.

That explains alot
Your looking for every excuse to justify not paying
Your not turning the jeep in
They are taking it from you for non payment
How long did you expect to own a new car without paying for it
