Gas pump issue

I'm hoping someone here might know what's causing this issue. My '13 Patriot Latitude suddenly starting having a problem at the gas pump, every time, every gas station. We put the nozzle into the tank and pull the handle. It starts to fuel, and then immediately shuts off. If you pull the handle again, it just clicks. We have to pull the nozzle out completely and then put it back in and try again. I've been able to just barely pull the handle and keep the gas trickling into the tank without it clicking off, but it takes forever.

Anyone have any idea what the deal is? Thanks in advance!

Hi

Hi, I bought my used 2009 Jeep Patriot and went to fill the tank 1st time. Exact same thing. They said it was the fuel sensor. Anyway, they had to replace the whole fuel tank. Their cost of course. Car was 2 days old, luckily, I went to top off the tank.

It’s a common issue on a lot of car brands. The gas tank has a vent valve that control pressure in the tank. When filling your tank, the pressure tells the pump “full tank”. Since your vent valve is messed up, it tricks the pump as if you’re topping off the fuel. Could be either the filler neck or the entire gas tank assembly. It’s possible that the filler neck comes separate on the patriot. Not 100% sure.

I have been having this issue with my 2012 jeep patriot latitude for the last 2 years at least. I have found one gas station in my area that has older pumps that allows me to pump slow but works better than going to the new gas stations.

I figured it was going to be expensive to fix. So I manage, always trying to fill up at a half of a tank... Very stressful in the winter time.

I read the JeepCares comment and wanted to make sure to report on the issue.
