Just received a letter in the mail from FCA announcing they will be extending the warranty on 2008-2012 front and rear crossmembers for Patriot, Compass and Caliber.

Warranty is now 10 years/unlimited metrage from original service date.

Annual inspections are also authorized and covered.

Kudos to FCA for stepping up about this.

I am going to guess that when push comes to shove, FCA will cave in and do repairs longer than 10 years. There has already been a precedent set of other manufacturers repairing rust problems beyond 10 years. FCA has now acknowledged that it is a problem that they are accepting responsibility for. The liability of someone getting seriously injured or killed from failure of these components is a huge risk. So, yes, just toss out the lawsuit card if you are denied frame repair past 10 years.

Another option is to be proactive. If the current subframe has only minor rust, maybe start treating it with a rust treatment like Krown, Rust Check, or CarWell. I want to believe that the attention given to this problem on this forum helped FCA come to the right decision! Good going everyone!!!!

Just for a fun FYI, here is Toyota's most recent (10/2016) dealing with frame rust: Toyota pays $3.4 billion in class-action suit over rusty truck frames - Autoblog

Surprised nobody has uploaded the letter, so here it is with my personal info removed of course. My guess is you could print and take to your dealer if they are not aware of it or at least use the second page to submit for reimbursement.

I know with the amount of rust on the rotors and associated components, it unfortunately isn't too surprising that there are other areas that fall a bit short on the corrosion protection. I will now have to take a closer look at my wife's crossmembers to see if we need to make a visit to our dealer.

So I stopped by the dealership today armed with the new extended warranty paperwork. The same people that said the subframe was rotted and no they could not help me were very happy to help today. It is going in next Monday for the inspection. They need it for a couple of days. I asked if it will cost me anything they said it should not cost me anything. Even the front end alinement is included. They want to check the rear subframe also. I will update as it goes along.

I hope all you guys have better luck with FCA than I had. My crossmember story started 3 months ago with the letter. i took my 08 Patriot with 75k to the local dealer and after a week with the car he said there is extensive corrosion on both crossmembers and many other components but that FCA had agreed to do the repairs and they were waiting on parts. after another week, they said that FCA had totaled the car due to corrosion as the reapirs were more than the car was worth and that i should expect a buy out offer. after 3 weeks dealing with FCA and getting no satisfaction (not even a return call) i got a call from a guy, Joe, in Dallas FCA.
He sounded concerned and said he was going to do everything he could to resolve the situation. so i took it to another Jeep dealer in the area and he confirmed that there was much more corrosion than just the crossmembers (reminder, this car has only 75k!). Joe sounded concerned and made a few calls and then got back to me (at least he called back) with the conclusion that FCA were only required to replace the crossmember but would not even do that unless I paid for all the other components that they said needed replacement (the parts list was $9400.00) and that there was no buy-out option. So I was lied to on 2 occasions.
So i'm just screwed. FCA will do nothing about the fact that they sold me a car that has corroded beyond repair after just 75k. it's not worth repairing...I can't sell it in good conscience. If it breaks and i have an accident, i will sue there ass and see if the courts think they're liable.
i've owned 2 cherokees before this patriot, but i feel i'm thru with jeeps. FCA is worthless and cares not for their customers and Jeep Cares is a joke. Jeep cares only for their profits.
i have contacted my lawyer and he suggested arbitration thru NCDS. we'll see.

Lordy, I hate to see posts like the above. You have every right to be angry. Please give us more background. Are you in the rustbelt? That shouldn't matter entirely, because other vehicles survive 10 years up here without needing that many parts replacement. But it would explain some of the problem. Another problem, and again not an excuse, is that Chrysler was gutted by 2008 (Daimler, then Cerebus) and it was not a good time to buy their product. Even my 2005 Caravan had some corrosion issues at age 9 that ticked me off a bit.

On your next purchase, you will have to dig very deep to assess the quality of any vehicle you are considering. It seems that Kia and Hyundai are on the upswing, while the venerable Honda and Toyota are showing signs of complacency, resulting in quality problems. I hang out at Bobistheoilguy which has a very diverse group of vehicle owners, so you get very broad input about vehicle problems. I had to laugh at a recent Dodge Ram bashing thread, because I just went through the $600 (defective/broken) spark plug replacement on my workplace Ford pickup. Ya, Google it....bad spark plug design results in outrageous plug replacement costs. Did Ford step up to the plate and assume responsibility for their gaffaw?? NO!

Sorry to hear of your experience. One Jeep dealer in my city is atrocious while the other one is a gem.

Often the case. I do wonder how some stay in business. :icon_rolleyes:

As for stratjim1's situation I have no idea what the underside of his Patriot looks like, but sometimes a vehicle is too far gone to repair. Considering mine is pretty high mileage and I live in snow country, my crossmembers are fine. I wonder what stratjim1's Patriot has been through? I only do light off-roading and not much of that, but I drive some pretty rough roads and snow happens half the year around here (just got 6" on Mother's Day). They love to use road salt around here, especially for those little petty storms.

Also, once you go to law or arbitration FCA (or any company) is through talking to you, so no dealer can help now. I'd save legal action as a last resort. I'm an official in my town and once someone threatens a lawsuit, we are muzzled by policy: we let the lawyers handle it from there.

My dealer “passed” this... rusted through and cracked. Corporate kept referring me to the dealer and they said bring it back in 12 months. I dumped it for as much $$$ as I could and got me a Dart. Aluminum cross-members so I don’t gotta worry about the insane rust.

Hi everyone. Hoping for some guidance on the Front and Rear Crossmember warranty.

I had repairs done back in 2016, and looks like I had the crossmember replaced, along with other repairs needed:

(with parts and labor)

Front Crossmember - $627
Outer tie rods and power steering pack - $907
Lower ball joints replaced - $688

I'm going to request the $627 in the reimbursement. My question, would the defective crossmember cause the other two issues to have happened? Should I just request reimbursement for the crossmember, or would I have a leg to stand on requesting reimbursement for other issues potentially caused by this defect? I'm highly doubtful that I would be compensated for those other issues, but I thought I'd ask before I submit my form.

Thank you!

I took my vehicle for a rear alignment. At that time I was told that the bar where the eccentric bolts attach was rotting out. However, no one was able to tell me what that bar is called. Is it the crossmember? Or do you have any idea what its called?

Well, I now have an update on my wife's Riot and not a great one. So about 20K miles ago the ball joints were shot, along with one of the front CV joints, so I ordered up some Moog replacement axles and RK-series control arms. Installation went pretty good, no real issues other than none of the (4) tranny axle seals matched up to the car...good thing I did not pull them first. Front x-member looked pretty good, just some basic surface rust. All is good till ~4 months ago when I realized the ball joint death rattle along with a crooked steering wheel indicated the Moog units were dying already...ugghh!!

This time I ordered up the Moog CK-series control arms that have grease-able ball joints. Well, life got in the way till I got the car for a day two weekends ago to toss them in. Two weeks before that new noises entered the picture, which included clacks, snaps and plings...WTF!?! I get the car up in the air and sure enough the passenger ball joint is almost ready to separate from the cup (pic below). The bigger issue is that I scrapped out over 1lb of metal flakes from the driver's side rear arm mount flange...uh, oh! I pulled the driver's arm out and was greeted with a half lifted sway bar mount and separated clamshell. When compared to the passenger side, the difference is quite striking and now explains all the additional sound effects during suspension movement. You can also see how much the sway bar mount pulls out when comparing the loaded vs unloaded pics.

So we schedule an appt with a local CDJR dealer and drop it off for the x-member replacement and handle an outstanding air bag controller recall. Long story, but we are denied a warranty replacement on the x-member!?! They couldn't explain why other than FCA won't cover it and didn't perform the recall work due to not ordering the controller, but they could give us a quote on the x-member replacement...the service writer was lucky I didn't have a blunt object in my hands at the time, so we took our Riot and left the building. I promptly called the Jeep dealer where we purchased it and explained the situation/needs. They explained that they had to inspect the x-member due to FCA rules and that they had a controller in stock, which they reserved for our visit...that is 10x more info we got from the other dealer. That brings us to our visit to the dealer this afternoon...no go on the x-member yet again...huh?? Apparently there is a very specific method for inspecting/testing the x-member from FCA that apparently requires holes to perforate flat areas of the x-member and that the torn/separated spots I noticed don't qualify under FCA rules...are you f'ing kidding me!! Our service writer certainly seemed honestly annoyed that he couldn't help us and gave us the local service rep phone number to complain, so I have a feeling we are not the first folks who have run into this.

I will call tomorrow to see if we can get this taken care of, as I don't want to have to drive it till the x-member breaks and possibly strands us out on the road somewhere...the saga continues!
