ETC and Throttle body issues

I've had a reoccurring issue with my ETC light coming on that I'm trying to figure out. This first happened at around 50k, the ETC light came on, went away when I'd turn it off but would come back on again. After a few weeks it come on and started flashing at which point I had no power at all and could only sputter along at around 20 mph. I drove it that way to the dealer where they replaced my first throttle body and the issue went away. The exact issue happened strangely at the exact location coming down a mountain and I limped in again at around 80k where they again replaced the throttle body. I'm not at 181k and the ETC started coming on periodically again a few weeks ago along with the check engine light. Whenever the ETC would come on I would start to misfire and sputter but not as bad as before. I changed my plugs and filter early but the issue came and went again. Whenever I would turn off the engine and restart it the ETC would go but the check engine light would stay on and it would run normally. I took the Jeep into the dealer while the ETC was on where they found numerous codes that were sensors, fuel door, and a 420 Cat code. They changed the sensors and the throttle body again so I'm now on throttle body #4. About 1,000 miles later the engine light came on again which I had read as a P420. Now the ETC light is coming on intermittently again and it goes away when I restart. I may need to replace my Cat but I don't think that could be causing the ETC issue could it? I doubt if it's the throttle body again this soon. Any ideas what this could be?

They need to check the wiring and relays in the engine compartment and the harness that runs through the drivers footwell.

The odds of 4 TB failures are incredibly slim. I'm more inclined to lean towards corrosion in the wiring harnesses causing havoc with the canbus system. Just a thought.

I have had wiring issues in the past that took forever to diagnose and repair at the dealership, I was in and out 4 times and down for perhaps 10 weeks overall.
They did not replace the entire wiring harness however. I'll bring that up when I take it back in. My dealer here is terrible though. Anytime I take it in it's a week wait before they get to it even with an appointment, then another waiting period to get the part shipped. I never get it back without being in the shop for at least 2 weeks. The alternative is to go to a dealer more than an hour away.
I thought the last time that it wasn't very likely that they were correct in replacing the throttle body. It has all been done under my warranty however.

Hey Pacerized,

TSB 09-003-10 may relate to your vehicle:

SUBJECT:
MIL Illumination Or ETC Illumination Or Loss Of Power
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting and if necessary replacing the air filter.
MODELS:
2010 (PM) Caliber (International Markets Only)
2010 (MK) Compass (International Markets Only)
NOTE: This Bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 2.2L Diesel (Sales Code
ENE) built between July 10. 2010 (MDH 0710XX) and October 4, 2010 (MDH
1004XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience a MIL Illumination or ETC Illumination or a loss of power
sensation. Further investigation by the technician may find the following Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTC).
· P2073 - Manifold Absolute Pressure/Mass Air Flow - Throttle Position
· P2074 - MAP/TPS Correlation - High Airflow/Vacuum Leak Detected
· P2279 - Intake Air System Leak
The cause of the MIL Illumination is due to air turbulence in the air filter assembly.
Installing a new air filter with an orientation feature forces the proper air flow through the
air filter assembly.

So, last week I noticed slight jerking while accelerating at highway speeds that would happen at random times, I didnt think much about it the first couple of times but after the 3rd or 4th time I realized that something was definitely not right and I was not imagining things. Then a couple of days ago I was turning onto a main road and all of a sudden the car started to shake and I lost all power and the ETC and ESP lights began to flash. This happened multiple times during that ride every time I would go to accelerate. I took it out again for a ride later that night and I barely made it halfway down my street before it acted up. I dropped it off at a trusted shop on Sunday and its been there since. The mechanic got it to act up a bit for him but he cant tell for sure what is causing the issue, and he doesn't want to go replacing things until he narrows it down. He scanned for codes and got an idling error, and he's thinking about replacing the throttle body tomorrow. I also have the stalling issue when gas is above 3/4 tank which he's also looking at.

So do you guys think I should advise him not to replace the throttle body, or is there anything else I can tell him that would help lead to finding the problem?

From what I understand when both the ETC and the Check engine light are flashing it usually is the throttle body. This happened to me twice and replacing the throttle body did correct the issue. What I'm having happen now is that the ETC light comes on but nothing is flashing.

When the flashing issue happened to me I would lose almost all power. When I would hold the pedal to the floor I was able to get up to perhaps 20 mph as the Jeep would sputter and misfire. Does this sound like the same symptoms to you?

This happened to my 2008 Jeep compass once about 20,000 miles ago (around 62,000 miles). I shut the jeep off and restarted with no problems. I saw in these forums that people were saying a bad battery could be the cause of this problem. My battery was around 6 years old so I put a new one in. May be coincidence, but it hasn't happened againd.

About 2 weeks later and my jeep is acting up again. Its not running smoothly, while idling it will occasionally drop below 500 rpm and shudder real bad and gets close to stalling, but hasn't yet. Then recently it began jerking and shuddering again under acceleration from a stop. Its not doing it in the same way it was before, no ETC light this time and no cutting out of throttle. Now it just feels as if the engine itself is struggling with something. I've had it stall before and it seemed that the issue related to the whole question with it being filled above 3/4, but it hasn't done that in a while and I think that could have been caused by my bad throttle body causing idling issues, plus its been acting up now when the tank was as low as 1/4 full.

I'm just going to keep on driving and see if this either goes away or progresses. Any ideas as to what I could look out for? My only guesses right now are some fuel system issue like injectors or something
