So I have a new issue with my patriot. My jeep is a 2011 4 x 4 with a 2.4 and the CVT transmission. I haven’t had any issues until now and when I accelerate just to get on the highway or anything like that not pushing the gas pedal hard or anything the RPMs Will go up to 3000 then immediately drop down to 2 1/2 thousand and then jump back up to 3000 really fast that it jerks me forward. It will also pulsate when I’m almost up to speed and it will steadily go up and down around 60mph but it’s not bad when it does this just annoying. This has never done anything like this before and I’m afraid that my transmission might be going out and I have like 3000 miles left on my warranty. I will put a link to the video of my RPMs jumping so you can see What I’m talking about. The vehicle has 125,000 miles on it and I’ve had it a little over a year. There is no check engine light and I checked for code just in case and there were no codes either. Hopefully it’s a simple fix like a sensor or something

I bought the vehicle used and drive like 60 miles/day. I drive 90% on the highway for work. Have put 30k miles on it since I bought it and have not had the transmission fluid changed in the past year. But I guess I will schedule an appt to have the filter and fluid changed. I haven't noticed any over heating or anything like others have experienced with their CVT. So hopefully just fluid change will fix the issue. OR does it sound like the transmission is going?

Well I got it looked at and it is the transmission. 125k miles before it went out. Luckily I had the 3rd party warranty so I only have to shell out $1k instead of a whole lot more. It would have been less but the warranty company wanted to put in a trans with 116k miles on it and I wasn't cool with that so I paid more to have a Chrysler one with a warranty put in it.

You have the classic symptoms of a CVT belt slipping.

The warranty people wanted you to take a tranny with 116K on it? Tell 'em to go pound sand. You've already got a worn out transmission, you don't need another one!

My first CVT failed at 110,000. I got 170k out of my second one. As I write lil Ignatz is in the hospital awaiting a transplant. Fortunately I have the original lifetime warranty. They were giving those with every purchase when they were fighting to stay in business back in '08-'09.

Popular wisdom on here is to change the fluid every 50-60,000 miles. Don't wait for the 100-120,000 recommended in the owners manual cuz it might not last that long.

So far my engine has been flawless.

Yeah, they buried that in the fine print. They promised to supply you with you already had: a well-used transmission.

I only ever bought one extended warranty and when I needed it the company was out of business. That was a couple hundred bucks blown -- about a week's pay at the time. That's what the repair cost so if I would have been better off saving the money for when the repair happened. Like you, I won't ever buy another. I totally agree that its worth the $1000 to get a rebuilt transmission; it is probably as good as a new one.

I don't know what you paid for your warranty, but with the money I've saved not buying warranties I could probably buy a new car outright. Frankly, if the product is any good, it shouldn't need an extended warranty. If a vehicle gets past 10-12,000 miles its probably going the distance.

In my case the warranty was offered free with purchase. Chrysler was doing all they could to get buyers in the showroom because their existence was hanging in the balance. Even then it was government assurance that they would back the warranty if Chrysler folded or got bailed out by another company, in this case Fiat, that got me to buy. I didn't want to own an orphan.

Good luck with your new one!

I paid a pretty fair amount for my warranty. like I said I will never buy another one, the cost of the warranty pretty much cancelled itself out with the cost of the transmission replacement. Altogether I only paid $900 not $1000 for the rebuilt trans. Which now has a 100k mile warranty. But I have my Jeep back now and it's running great. Maybe even better than when I first bought it.
On another note:
I wish this CVT trans would allow for better gas mileage. At 75mph I'm at like 3200rpm. I had a 2018 compass for a loaner while my jeep was getting fixed and it was getting 31mpg. Rpms were like 1500 at 75mph. I won't get another vehicle with this CVT crap in it though. I thought those only came on Chinese scooters haha.
