Hi all. We own a 2009 Jeep Patriot with 75K miles on it that I bought for my daughter (used from a dealer), last summer. Driving back to college this weekend, she got the transmission fluid light coming on. knowing this is a sealed transmission, I had her immediately pull over and had the vehicle towed by AAA to the local dealer in Macon Ga.

Dealer this morning tells me that these units cannot be repaired and that if the light goes on, you have to basically replace the unit. He then quoted me 5K to replace the unit. OUCH!!! Especially since I owe the bank 7K on the vehicle still.

1. Is it true these units cant be worked on, or is the dealer just BSing me knowing Im an out of town sucker in need.

2. If the unit does need a replacement, what kind of price would be normal?

I know these need dealer work, but I never heard of a system where its totally disposable with one light. She didnt drive the vehicle further than the next off ramp before shutting it down.

Thanks
Eric

These CVTs are the exact same ones Nissan uses. Nissan will work on them even if it's in your Jeep as opposed to just changing them. Take it to the Nissan dealer...and drive it over there to see what happens. What is there to lose at this point?

Also, 5k is way overpriced

And just because the light is on doesn't mean the CVT needs replacing. There can be other reasons the light is on...maybe the CVT overheated and a fluid change would fix it among other things.

I'm sure others will chime in on this...good luck to you!

Lazy dealer looking to pay his boat payment.

Can be serviced by any shop that works on CVT's. Its a jatco unit, as Griff said, used in nissans, hyundais, fords, mitsubishis etc. I would call around to transmission shops/nissan dealers, and see what they would charge for a service on it. I would bet that the fluid is old (most seem to need new fluid at around 60k miles.) and that a fluid change will be what gets you back on the road. Most get their fluid changed for under/around $300.

If the vehichle wasn't driven for a long period of time in limp mode/with the light on I would bet the transmission is ok just in need of fluid change/filter. I would chance with spending $300 as opposed to 5k (which I've seen people on here who said they were quoted between 3&4k). Any dealership familiar with cvt's can service the fluid and filter in these.

A quick search of Mopar's parts web site returns a price of $3200 for the most expensive version, 2.4 liter, 4x4 with off-road low crawl ratio. Other versions come in a little over $2k. The dealer is looking for a rip off, you should report him to the dealer network.

We have a 2010 Jeep Patriot. having the issue of temp light going off after traveling on highway over 70mph for long distances.the car slows and then eventually stops. Took it to a garage and they suggested replacing the CVT which will cost about $650. My question - as I am hesistant to spend this- is will this likely fix the problem? Anyone have experience with such a replacement? Car has over 100K miles.

I responded to your other post.
