2011 Jeep Patriot - manual trans (5 speed)

The plastic cap on the top of my MANUAL shifter knob broke :( I want to buy a new ball type knob, but I'd like to understand how to do the removal and installation before diving in.

I've already searched the forums and couldn't get a definitive answer on how to remove the existing MANUAL knob. I've scene it mentioned dozens of time that all you need to do is simply "pull it up", but I'm inclined to believe that might just be for the AUTOMATIC shifter.

Can someone please describe the removal and installation procedure in detail. What tools might I need? Where do I start?

I really appreciate the help.

I'm no expert, just a guess:

I'd look hard at the piece just below the knob, I think you would want to move that down the shaft before you took the ball up the shaft and off.

I'd bet a small amount that there is some kind of compression, locking thing going on with that.

With a 2011 you should be still under warranty, no?

Unfortunately, my warranty has expired. It's on me now.

Should I try to pry up the chrome finished plastic rectangular piece at the base of the leather sheathing? This way I could possible pull down the leather and see if there's something keeping the knob attached to the rod?

Really not an expert either. I'm a hands-on type person, but I want to be a little educated before I turn a small problem into a huge diaster.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help. Here is what that says:

Hello and welcome to just answer. Push the chrome trim piece which is just below the shift down the shaft. Then look to see if there is a small clip holding the knob to the shaft. If so remove it and pull the knob up and off of the shaft. If you do not see this clip then swiftly pull the knob up and off of the shaft.

As you can see in the pictures I attached there is no chrome piece just below the shift knob down the shaft. The leather sheathing is snug to the bottom of the knob.

I was reading a thread the other day and he guy said it just pulls off, he said that right when you think something is gonna break the knob will pop off.

Isn't that the CVT knob?

I'm pretty sure the manual knob has a lock of some sort that has to slide down underneath.

Couldn't tell you where but I'm convinced I've read it somewhere.

OP, have you tried simply unscrewing it? It may just be on a threaded shaft with a dab of Loctite. Maybe.

Honestly, I haven't tried anything yet. I wanted to get a little knowledge first before I royally screwed things up.

I could pull on it, but I'm afraid I'll break something. I could turn it, but again I'm not sure if I'll tear the leather base. It looks like the knob is all one piece and the leather is flush against the bottom.

Not sure where to start.

I tried and tried to get mine off and the best i could come up with was to remove the silver cap, slide down the plastic piece that secures the boot and cut through the knob with a coping saw.

After doing so, I learned that the shaft is knurled and the knob is either heat fitted, secured with some sort of super epoxy or ultrasonically welded to the shaft.

After removing the knob, I shortened the shaft about an inch; it was a little long for my liking.

Here is my current knob-

and the device I made to keep the boot up. It consists of 2 of these hole plugs glued together with a wrap of electrical tape around them. I drilled a hole through the assembly and used a grommet and a zip tie to keep it tight against the knob.

LOL, use some hot glue or some epoxy and you should be fine..

I removed and installed the shift knob from my Patriot and installed one from a BMW M3. I had to cut the knob off with a mini cutter, once it's cut it pulls right off. I shortened the shaft about 1 1/2 inches, then I installed the BMW shifter using an epoxy glue and it looks perfect and fits perfectly in your hand. I originally tried the pulling method and even tied a rope through my sunroof and pulled, it wouldn't even budge.

This is pretty comical. As an engineer, I cannot help but laugh at how flawed this design is. In order to replace a $5 pleather shift boot, you need to replace the entire assembly. Threading the shaft and using a screw on knob would have been a heck of a lot easier and saved the company money on warranty replacements of the boot.

My Patriot is less than 2 years old and the boot is falling apart, but rather than have it replaced under warranty with another vinyl one, I had the wife stitch one out of Italian leather, I just need it to warm up outside so I can install it.

It's the exact same process with the 2011 and up Compass. My friend had the 5 Speed compass and had to cut his off with a rotary tool. there was no way it was just pulling off... we tried. and I am not a small guy. nor is he.

I'm thinking of doing the same, but does anyone know the diameter of the shift arm? Im trying to find shift knobs BEFORE i take the cutter to it.

Any help would be great. thanks!
