DETROIT (AP) — Chrysler is recalling about 1,700 small Jeeps because faulty gas tank valves can cause fires.

The recall affects some 2012 all-wheel-drive Jeep Compass and Patriot SUVs.

Chrysler says the valves were damaged when the manufacturer tested them for leaks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the valves can leak gasoline if the SUVs are involved in a crash. Chrysler says it doesn't know of any fires or injuries.

The recall is expected to start in June. Dealers will replace the fuel tanks free of charge.

Owners with questions can call Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.

So there is no danger of this fault starting to leak untill June ???? So what do 2012Patriot & Compass owners drive untill then ????
Perhaps Jeep will give all these owners a Brand New GC untill they can be bothered to recall the faulty vehicles . That would be better than seeeing a few thousand people incinerated !!

" Faulty gas tank valves can cause fires " !!!!!!!There was a clever guy down at the plant the day that thought came up ???

Anyway , for your healths sake " No Smoking near this vehicle " ( Untill after June )

The affected Patriots and Compasses were built from Dec 17, 2011 through Jan. 2, 2012

Well I am saved for now. My Patriot was built in the month of April 2011 :)

Chrysler is recalling 1,689 2012 Jeep Compasses and Patriots because fuel leakage could occur, increasing the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.

"Some vehicles may have been built with a fuel tank assembly containing a damaged roll-over valve," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "In the event of an impact or roll-over, fuel leakage could occur, increasing the risk of a fire."

The affected Patriots and Compasses were built from December 17, 2011 through January 2, 2012.

Chrysler said it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, fuel leaks or fires related to the defect in documentation filed with federal safety regulators.

Jeep dealers will replace the fuel tank. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-953-1403.

Well since they will be replacing the fuel tank why not install a 15-gallon tank instead of the wimpy 13-gallon.

Looks like I will have to call that 1-800 number, I bought mine in January....I received a call from the dealership about 2 weeks ago and they left a message saying the part was in for my 2012 Patriot. I called them back and said I am not aware of my Patriot needing a part and there is nothing wrong with it that I am aware of and I have only driven it 1400 kms. The guy said maybe they mixed me up with somebody else and he would look into it and call me back. I never received a phone call back.......hmmmmmmm

Snowie....

they will probably tell you to bring it in right away, and then when you ask when will it be finished youll get the we will call you with an estimated day. dealers dont like doing recall work since they dont get paid as much as they do for cash pay so recalls and warranty work is low priority.

As its warranty /safety/recall work ..dont forget to ask for your nice clean new low milage free loaner!! No clunkers or high milage smoking Neons ...thank you !!

I might just squeeze by, I think I picked mine up dec 20th and it was at the dealership a few days earlier and likely waited a week or more to be shipped.

Just look inside the driver door. It tells you when it was manufactured on one of the stickers.
