I'm new to this sight and considering buying the new 2011 Patriot. My major concern is the water leaking issue. Do you suppose the issue has been solved for the 2011 models, or will time only tell?

Hi Tantor, I can't say for sure, but I know a TSB was issued about the problem. also, a man I work with just bought a 2011 and was very concerned about the leak issue. His dealer told him the leaks were on Patriots build before August 2010. This is just hear say of course.

I think you've got grounds for concern Tantor. I'm sorry about the reception your question got. If, like me, you're a Patriot owner with a roof leak you don't really care Jack Sh** about where you post as long as you get some re-assuring answers.
I would certainly hope that the leaks are indeed a thing of the past, after all, they've had years of feedback now to sort it.
I was more than a bit worried to hear Lady Di say that it was only a problem on vehicles prior to August this year__Jayzes, that's only two months back! And I've just bought an October vehicle!
No, Tantor, from my point of view, you just keep on posting; if people don't want to hear it, then they don't need to click on it, do they? Rock on...

the real answer is ONLY TIME WILL TELL.

as far as i understand, no design changes were implemented that would prevent improper assembly and sealing at the factory.

you reduce the probability of occurrence not by increasing final assembly inspections as this only reduces the defective product that reach the customer but Chrysler is still left with a high defect rate. rather, reducing the probability of occurrence is achieved by performing design improvements that make improper assembly and sealing less likely and thus reduces defective product that reaches the customer

Wow, I didn't mean to start a civil war. Easy on trashing the Hondas though. All of my Hondas have been nothing but tanks that last well over 200k miles. I don't know much about Jeep and there longevity, but I do like the looks and cargo of the Patriot. I guess I will probably have to wait until 2011 owners start posting. Until then, I guess I'll just have to haul all of my crap in my 1984 Chevy van... oh and my Honda Accord with 170k miles.

Lol:) I'm not usually one to get in a flame war, but if somebody throws the first shot.... that and being highly medicated at the moment helps a little. Like I said in the other thread, its only rained once since I got the 2011 and good luck so far. I never had a leak issue in my 2008 at all. Now mind you neither had sunroofs.

Yes, water leaks should not happen.
There are quite a few Patriots over the years that have leaked.
There are many many many more that have never leaked.

My '08 has always been dry.

Check out the water leak poll and keep in mind that the dry vehicles more than likely are being incredibly under-reported because there is nothing to be mad about if there is no problem.

If a Patriot is the vehicle that will fit your needs then get it.
If that vehicle begins to leak then put forth a lot of effort to make sure they do everything they can to fix it.
If it doesn't leak then you've worried for nothing.

Make your best deal with the dealer, then say "OK, good deal . . . if your dealership can guarantee me a buy-back at 100% purchase price if it leaks within the first year." Put it on the bill of sale just like the trade-in and the down payment; its a condition of the sale. If they have issues with that or try to hide behind the manufacturer's warranty, introduce them to the Jeep Patriot web site and show them the multiple threads.

I'm sure that most Patriots don't leak. But why would anyone purchase a new car without researching possible problems? To me, a waterfall inside my vehicle is a pretty big deal. I am just researching to save myself from actually worrying every time it rains. From the sounds of it, the dealers don't really do "anything they can" to fix it. Car salesmen are like politicians. Why would I want to be at the mercy of the idiot salesman?

Water has been an old issue for PATs since the start...
And since its an issue from the archives I wonder why manufacturers can't find a way to solve this once and for all...
In this case the leaking problem is most likely due to the way the sheetmetal skin ties together between roof and sides as well as other areas. The sheetmetal has butt joints for the most part and therefore relies on silicone (or whatever type) sealant to make it watertight.

That is not going to change until a complete redesign of the vehicle.

What they can and should do:

They rely heavily on silicone sealant to seal the joint.
If they find a vehicle that leaks, that vehicle should have ALL of its roof joints resealed from front to back.

Could you expand on this a little? I'm still contemplating my decision as to whether or not I should buy a 2011 because of the water leak issue(s). Experiencing this firsthand with the leaking sunroof in my current vehicle I know the kind of frustration it causes, and it seems there is a lot of posts here for this very common/well known issue with the Patriots.

I like the idea of making the dealer guarantee no leaks via a buy-back clause on the bill of sale, because I know how quickly the basic warranty goes by and issues past that point are paid for out of my own pocket. Was this something you did for your purchase? Was the dealer hesitant?

I though I posted on this before but must have been another thread, anyway, I have a 2011 Patriot with NO sunroof and have been bone dry. I recently found an automatic car wash that the pressure litterly moves the jeep as it washing so it has a ton of water pressure and still no leaks. When I got mine I researched the issue as well and from what I found on this site as well as other is that most of the reported problems were with 2008, 2009 and early bilt 2010, and still have not heard of any issues with the 2011.
Hope that helps.
