I went to my local dealer about a month or so ago...they couldn't duplicate the problem. I even told them about some of the issues I was reading on here about it, to maybe set them in the right direction. Unfortunately, the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. They checked for vacuum leaks, but everything checked out ok. A few days later, the problem continued.

I have been able to avoid limp mode, by using the remote start, instead of starting it with the key in the ignition.

Ok so, seems rain wasn't the issue. It rained yesterday for a little bit, ending about an hour before i left work, temp was still cool (lower 70s) and had no trouble getting home. Had no trouble getting to work this morning, however i just went to BK for lunch and it was sputtering stalling and flashing that stupid light at me the whole way there (about 87 degrees outside right now). It occurred to me the only other common demoninator that i didn't think of is the AC. I def had my AC on every time this has happened. So i left BK, started the jeep, shut my air off... no problems at all (minus a slight miss in the engine during hard acceleration but nothing remotely close to the actual issue).

So, I'm not a mechanic, i'm a computer nerd. I know enough about cars to do my own maintenance and light repairs (anything i can swap out in 4 bolts or less).... I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what my AC has to with the Electronic Throttle Control, and what can i possibly try to fix this?

I agree, the same sequence has been the same for me, even the radio being off with the a/c being on, to the radio being on with the a/c being off it seems to be the same either way, it throws the lightning bolt light. Has been in the shop twice for this already and it still does this almost everytime I hop in the car. Can go about 1/4 a mile, first stop sign i have to cut car off and start back up in traffic. Becoming quite a burden but not trying to throw cash into something thats unfixable apparently, because ive seen no answers in the forum.

I have had the same issues with my 2014 Patriot Blackhawk, was driving in 60km zone (AUS) and the ETC light came on and cut my speed down to 20km. It is my first car and I have only had it for a year and a half so it's pretty upsetting to see so many other owners experiencing the same issue.

I made the mistake of going to a local JEEP dealer where they had the 2015 patriot for 5 hours, they were going to give me a ride home 20 some miles away and I would be stuck all weekend!

I called at 5pm (Jeep shop closing time) and they said they had no clue what the problem was !!

I said to the Service manager, "Let me get this straight. I bring my JEEP to a JEEP dealer and you have NO IDEA what's wrong with my JEEP Patriot?"

theyre just gonna rob you and over charge you for something they know thats wrong, but wont mention til youre out of warranty.
the issue is your throttle body sensor.
buy one. Get prepared to install it.
Its tedious, but easy to do yourself.
save your self HUNDREDs of dollars.

2012 Jeep Patriot with the U codes listed on this thread.
Replaced failed throttle body and vehicle runs correctly again.
Throttle body must send voltage on Can bus after it fails that play havoc.
Thanks to all those that provided great info on this problem!

It's hard to say exactly what will happen and when, but other than the engine stopping completely it could eventually go into "limp" mode, which means the speed will be limited to 40 mph or less until repairs are made.

Hey guys,
My ETC light just came on and my car went into limp mode. I’ve managed to pull over but after some estimates from you all what costs you’ve paid to resolve this? What happened etc.
I’m actually waiting to take it a garage tomorrow as all garages in this local town are all closed on a Sunday.

Throttle bodies have plastic gears that wear over time.

Expect to pay anywhere from $400-$600 USD depending on if it's a dealer or independent shop, and whether or not they're using a cheap aftermarket or OEM part.

Try to avoid the cheap stuff, they sometimes fail within a few months or less.

Hello. It just happened to my 2009 for the first time but it is an addition to troubles I have when I fill my gas tank. It always shakes and misses or stall after I fill up. I think it is because the fuel inlet pipe is screwed up.

On the ETC light, check the codes and see what the system thinks is going on.

The gas tank problem is probably the roll over valve. Too much ethanol in the fuel may be the cause, so you could try filling at a different gas station and see if that helps.

You can also try thumping on the bottom of the fuel tank with a mallet or your hand and see if that un-sticks it, but it will likely only be temporary.

My family’s coping strategy is to avoid filling the tank completely until such time as I want to check the gas mileage. Then, I fill the tank at a station where I can quickly get up over 30MPH. Above that speed, the effect is a momentary drop in power (at least on my Patriot).
