Hello everyone,

I have 2 jeep patriots - high altitude 2.4L (2017) each with about 45,000 miles. Both are having the same intermittent issue. When I place either one in drive, it engages with a hard clunk. This happens most but not all of the time. Since it is happening with both identical model and year jeeps with about the same mileage, I am assuming that this is a common issue. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks

Welcome! My Patriot (2014) is a manual, so I don't have your conditions or your problem. Since both your Patriots do it, I'd say it's normal. In my experience with automatic transmissions, they all make at least a small clunk when shifting out of Park.

That the clunk is intermittent or more noticeable at times, makes me wonder if it's more likely when you're parked on a grade? That could just be the stress being relieved when the parking pawl is disengaged.

If your Patriots were higher mileage -- say 4 times your miles -- I'd think engine mounts. That would be vastly premature in your case and highly unlikely both Patriots would suffer the same defect.

I like my first guess. I bet it's just the normal reaction of the parking pawl disengaging. I think you're OK. Again, welcome!

Welcome to the forums!

Though you probably have the 6 speed vs CVT, you might want to consider getting the transmission fluid changed if it hasn't been done recently.

The 6AT's have an internal filter that can't be replaced without removal and tear down, so it's good to keep the fluid clean.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes, they both have the 6 speed AT not the CVT. When I back out of the driveway on to the street, wait nano second and shift from reverse to drive, this most often results in the hard clunk when the transmission is engaged. Intermittently this happens this with both cars and began to occur several months ago. FYI, these vehicles are parked on level surfaces.

If there isn't any vibration while driving, accelerating, deceleration, etc. that could indicate a worn cv joint or worn U joint if 4x4, then I would suggest a transmission fluid drain and refill if it hasn't been done recently, or at the very least the fluid level checked to make sure it's not low.
