My jeep is making a bad knocking noise. Took belt off and it stopped. Got under it and think it's the a/c compressor. Maybe. Can it be the ac compressor clutch if I'm still getting cold air?
Another dumb question about a/c compressor.

The a/c compressor doesn't have the old school electric clutch; the pulley is always turning the compressor while an electrically controlled internal swash plate changes the stroke of the compressor from full to none.
Did you check the alternator? The pulley on the alternator can make a lot of noise when it fails:
