We have a strange noise coming from the front underneath of our patriot. Its a rattling clunking sound coming from underneath and front . Its never been in a wreck and has approx 106k miles on it. We had it at the dealer and they did the following
new front rotors and brakes
new front calpers
new transfer case
new wheel bearings
noise is still there
its not showing any codes on scan and no lights on dash
noise happens at about 40mph when accelerating uphill and if the road bends right its slightly worse and more prominent.
if you drive it first thing in the am when the outisde is very cold its much worse until it warms up then it goes back to its regular noise.
it stops completely when you let off the gas
there are no vibrations and it seems to drive well.
the dealer cant figure it out…….3000$ later….

does anyone have an idea what it could be?
thank you for any advice

They checked it they said. The cv, bushings etc. the noise is nowhere near as pronounced as the one in the video. I had my wife drive it past me and couldnt hear it outside, but you could hear it in the car.

Since you said it usually happens when in gear and accelerating, it doesn't seem like it should be the alternator pulley (or something else belt driven) but I'll throw a video of what a bad one sounds like just for reference:

Lastly, if the dealer hasn't tried it already, it may help to put it up on a lift and run it with someone inside working the accelerator and turning the wheels while someone else checks the axles, etc. and maybe listens with a stethoscope to see if they can find it.

Hers a short video, it's hard to hear but you can hear it clicking, since it's not very cold outside it's not too bad. The noise starts at 40 and the volume gets louder as you increase, but the rate of the clicking/rattle stays the same.

From what I can hear, it sounds like an inner CVT joint.

Have you tried rotating the tires and see if the sound moves to a different location?

If you're sitting parked and rev the engine to that same RPM is it there at all or no?
I have not tried rotating the tires, we just got two new in the front in july and the noise started sometime after that but im not sure exactly how long after. The cv joint video above the noise seemed to go faster as the car went faster, ours stays steady but just gets lounder As you go faster. Is there a different way to check the cv joint. I did like the car above and didnt get anything i also looked for grease etc and found nothing.

Also if parked and revving no noise

Bit of an update, took it to a different shop, they said they thought trans, took it to the transmission repair place, they replaced a control arm…. Still doing it…. this is getting old. ill upload the audio i sent them if anyone has an idea in just a min

Sounds like a bad cv joint, or the alternator pulley.

If they can't find it via a non-moving inspection, the only other things that come to mind are running it on a lift while checking for axle wobble and listening around with a stethoscope, or keep driving it until it gets worse and becomes more obvious.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Sorry I don't have an original guess. I like the bad CV joint idea the best. Certainly not the transmission. Bearings usually howl, hum, or grind -- not rattle.

Universal joints or engine mounts usually just make a single clunk as you apply the gas or let off it.

I don't know why the dealer did all that stuff unless it needed to be done anyway. I wouldn't relate that sound to any of those things.

So final update, took it a a reputable transmission shop and they looked it over…didnt know exactly what was wrong without having to tear it apart for hundreds of dollars, he recommended we unload it. Its crazy, we took it to 4 places, spent 3000$ and ended up getting rid of it. Thank you for all your input and help, its much appreciated.

If it only happens when it's really cold outside from what I've read it may be your torque converter it doesn't engage properly until it warms up after few miles my trail hawk started making an unusual noise that sounds like it's coming from underneath the center of the vehicle it almost sounds l8ke a jack brake on a truck when rpms are dropping most noticeable between 20 and 50 mph when I hit the highway after 10 minutes driving back roads then worksfine th3 thing I would like to know is am I causing damage before it warms up
