Hello,

I have a 2WD 2014 jeep Patriot. Recently it has developed a humming noise that seems to progressively get a little worse as speed increases. I am having a hard time identifying if it’s coming from the front or rear. My first go to was wheel bearings. Fronts seem good. Rears not so much. The right rear tire I can wiggle when grabbing the 12 and 6 position. I replaced the rear wheel bearings and the tire can still be wiggled when grabbing the 12 and 6 position and hum noise at all speeds. I checked the torque on all bolts for wheel bearing and wheel. What other part could be worn out to cause this? I do not see or feel any play in the rear suspension except for the wheel itself. The rear drums are shot. Can that cause play?

I am not sure if this is the source of the hum but still an issue that needs to be addressed. If anyone else has experienced a hum outside of wheel bearings they may help. All brakes need replaced not sure if those can cause that sort of noise. Previous experiences with other vehicles they do not hum but squeal.

I will check the part from video when home at the vehicle. The hum does not change if turning the wheel. It just slowly gets louder as vehicle speeds up. It is a fairly quiet hum but getting worse as time goes on. I do not feel any vibrations in the steering wheel or rest of vehicle.

It could also be a tire issue, like a broken belt or cupping of the tread. And inspect the strut for oil leaks. A weak strut can let the suspension oscillate, like dribbling a basketball but with your tire. More importantly, is the humming at least carrying a tune?

With a little help from my son we were able to get a little more info. While he rocked the wheel I felt around on all the bushings. If looking at it correctly and online correctly it looks like the upper control arm bushing has some play causing wobble in the tire. Could this cause a hum while driving? Regardless guess it needs to be replaced.

Attached is a photo to make sure looking at the right part. My two fingers pointing at bushing with play.
