When I was at the dealership this week, the service manager showed me the work that had been done on
my Patriot. (a hole in a pipe fixed).

While talking he pointed to a pipe that extends to the rear of the vehicle and said "that alone is $5000 (thousand) dollars to replace".

I did not believe a word he was saying and did not respond but am wondering why someone would
say that about a pipe?

I only paid $8,500 for the Jeep!

2010 Jeep Patriot
65,6000 miles

Thanks,
Susan

He may have been talking about the exhaust pipe, but steel pipe is cheap, unless he was talking about the entire exhaust system which includes at least one platinum-filled catalytic converter to convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and make the exhaust easier for the trees to convert back to oxygen for us. However, perhaps he was pointing to the driveshaft if you have 4x4? Or maybe quoting you prices that reflect inflation and a lack of availability for the parts since the Patriot is now six years out of production?

Dealership stealership. Find a nice local mechanic if you ever need something like that done, especially if you can find one who lets you bring your own parts. I've got one for all the stuff I can't do myself and they're actually worth what they charge.

There's not a single pipe-like part under our patriots that cost $5000. A California certified catalytic convertor might be $900-1200 depending on supply. The rest of the exhaust is $200-300. The driveshaft is maybe $500. That dude was trying to either scare you or was trying to impress you in some bizarre way.

No matter what he was pointing at 50 percent of that is B.S. with dealership markup / now we are down to $2500 still B.S. BUT again Not Sure what He was Referring Too....Cat. etc etc
why dont you ask him? For the money involved , dont you think youd want to do what parts they are doing? Maybe if you get an answer you can post it here and we can see if it could cost that
