Hey everyone, I am working on a '12 Patriot with the CVT trans that is 4x4 that is overheating. It has about 123K miles on it. It overheats after about 30-40 minutes of driving or so, but overall doesn't seem to affect driveability during the test drive I took it on but the customer has said he's noticed that it shakes more and can end up lacking power. No extra load or anything on it, not super hot out (in western NC and of course its fall so its cooled off here), just highway driving. He said that another shop has recently changed the fluid in an effort to correct this but it did not correct it. I checked the fluid and the fluid is a little under the max, but I noticed the pan is still leaking fluid, as well as it looks like whoever changed the fluid also broke one bolt and stripped another in the pan, so I'll have to drop the pan either way to fix that but since the fluid isn't low or overfull I don't think that's causing the issue. The customer did say both filters were replaced as well. I've seen several people say in other forums that the cooler bypass valve could be at fault, so I'm just wondering if theres a way to test this without just throwing parts at it? It doesnt have an external cooler either just has the typical lines to the radiator. Or if there's anything else that can cause this issue? Thanks everyone!

Since you have the 2012 (unless it's the FDII trail rated model), there's no "soup can" oil-to water exchanger, only the integrated cooler bypass plate (where the soup can goes).

It can still cause problems though, if it's working both lines should be hot, if not it's probably failing so you might change it out.

It isn't the off road model, just a latitude. I did check the line temperature and one was hot and the other was warm, so it seems its flowing through and one line has cooler fluid, but not sure what proper temp is, so I was wondering if there was another way to check it but doesn't seem so.. might replace the valve anyways since I have to drop the pan again anyways. Not sure it's worth it to the customer to add extra coolers and what not as I think they're just wanting to sell it so not sure the best direction to go haha

I think I'll try that, flushing the cooler and fixing the leak which of course will lead to fluid being changed again anyways. Thinking about changing the valve too but I see no auto parts stores seem to carry it, anyone know of where to get a good one other than I'm sure the dealer?

Yeah, i'll make sure to not overfill it. I meant to ask, do you think I do need to change both filters? The customer said they had both filters and the fluid changed at the same time, only reason I'm gonna drop the fluid again is to fix the leak and I'll flush the cooler too (just drain the fluid and blow some brake clean and then some air through it until everything looks clean) since im there
