Hello everyone,

I acquired my current 2010 Jeep Patriot 2WD 2.0L (at 149,000 miles now) almost two years ago from a used car dealership out in California. Am pleased with the car itself, I do enjoy driving it - is comfortable and spacious - but have come across several problems with since owning... Apparently the dealership didn't notice there was no cap containing the transmission fluid, so what was in there ran its course until the transmission failed and needed to be replaced, which is when I was informed of the missing cap. That was the big expense, one I debated whether or not it was even worth going through with, but I did. {One day the horn started sounding off sporadically while it was sitting in the drive, completely off, no key in the ignition. Ended up unplugging the thing and haven't known what to do about it since.} More recently the coil/sparkplug on cylinder three started causing a misfire, so had them all replaced per the mechanic's recommendation to avoid further problems later.

The current issue I face, which is what ultimately lead me to joining this forum community, is that it has been leaking antifreeze/coolant. I figured this to be something that I could manage handling myself, considering how much I've already spent on repairs up until now. I was made aware of the problem when the check engine light came on accompanied with the )⚡( symbol. Looking under the hood I discovered the coolant reservoir was completely empty, and what I thought was dirty snow spots that melted around the vehicle become apparent as being what fluid was missing. After buying new universal pre-mixed 50/50, filling it up, and burping the air out of the system; both the check engine and )⚡( lights turned off. However, the leaking problem still persists. I've replaced the radiator cap as I discovered the rubber seal on the previous was worn and cracked. Am trying to determine what next I might try to solve the problem. Have noticed after driving for a bit, when I pop the hood there is fluid splashed over the top of the engine. From what I can tell, there aren't any leaks in the hoses, the coolant reservoir isn't leaking, I can't see any damage from the radiator either. Though there is this one concerning spot producing moisture around the right-side of the filler neck. Even managed to snag a picture as a confirmed visible drip was happening. Should I be looking into replacing the filler neck next? It doesn't seem like the hose itself is leaking, but just where it connects to the t-piece filler neck.

Thank you all for your time and consideration, I try to explain things thoroughly and include as much information as possible. I appreciate any and all help in this matter.

Welcome to the group! If you can see it leaking around the filler neck area, I'd replace that piece and the cap. Then I'd get myself a pressure tester from Harbor Freight and check the rest of the system.

Hi James, welcome to the forum.

The plastic filler neck piece might have a crack in it somewhere, it's not super common but does happen. You could try having it pressure tested to be sure.

Since yours is a 2010, you might be able to just replace the filler neck with a kit instead of the entire hose:
Thank you for the timely response! I've been investigating how to go about disconnecting the hoses from the filler neck, but am having trouble finding an example of someone doing so with this kind of setup. My concern is that if I cannot remove the hoses from the plastic neck, then I won't be able to replace that part by itself without the hoses as well. Looking online at rockauto.com I've found several of the filler necks that come with hoses attached.

It seems as though they are listed for "manual transmission" which my patriot has an automatic transmission - does this matter at all? Or so long as the part is an appropriate replacement (in dimensions) should I be alright? Uncertain if there is any brand between the options I ought to choose over the others: Dayco, Gates, ACDelco, or Continental

Thank you for the welcome and your response! I have replaced the cap, but am having concerns regarding how to replace the plastic filler neck as I don't see a simple way to disconnected the hoses from either side. Am wondering if I should then be looking into buying a filler neck that comes with both hoses attached. On rockauto.com I've found several brands available, Dayco, Gates, ACDelco, and Continental. Am unsure if they are all the same dimensions or if there is one I ought to be purchasing over the other options.

Sorry, I can't be any real help. I've never needed to look into it.
