I have a 2016 Jeep Patriot with a 2.4 liter engine, 6 speed automatic transmission, 4x4. Bought this thing new in January '16 and have dealt with this thing periodically shifting like a manual transmission. In other words, when I take off from a stop as it shifts from 1st to 2nd there is a hesitation in the shift as if I were putting in the clutch and shifting. Granted it is only for a second, the hesitation is sometimes awful. I took it back to the dealer who then drove it but it didn't act up. Unfortunately it only does it periodically. As we all know, intermittent problems are a pain to diagnose. Just wondering if anyone can give me some insight into if this is just inherit of this specific transmission and configuration of the engine and 4x4.

Are you applying more throttle when this "sluggishness" occurs? If so it may just be the delay in the electronic "drive-by-wire" throttle (which unfortunately affects virtually all newer vehicles, since most/all now use electronic throttles rather than a mechanical cable connection).

He never misses an opportunity to trash a 6 speed over the puny sluggish cvt.
Even when it's uncalled for.
Hey, CVT is quicker than 6-spd. Check my youtube. Just roll on the throttle and add an aux cooler. They could have tuned the whole thing better, yes, but they built it to a price and to an economy, not to Hellcat/Cadillac performance.

I don't think that I am. Good point about the electronics affecting shifting vs old style automatic transmissions.

Service writer at dealership said he feels the hesitated shift but unless there is a flash alert or recall there is not much they can do. They advise since I still have a lot of warranty left to continue to drive and see if it gets worse. When it shifts smoothly I have no complaints about my Patriot whatsoever. But, when it pauses between 1st and 2nd like a manual shift, its a bit annoying. I'm hoping someone out there has had the same experience and comment.

I really appreciate all of the input from everyone. Even the CVT comments. Passion is good.

I wonder what would happen if you could diy reset/relearn the transmission computer? There are a number of Google hits for Patriot Transmission Relearn, but I am not aware if these techniques work on the 6 speed. My 6 speed shifts okay from 1st. to 2nd., but it is very short in 1st., maybe because my wife drives very slow.

Did the dealer offer to reflash your computer? It might just be a computer programming glitch.

Do you know if the dealer can reset/relearn the transmission computer?
