Why does the Jeep Patriot have so much road noise?

With our Patriot, the road noise seems so much worse than my Ram 1500 or a Dodge 200 I recently drove. Why is this and can anything help like adding skid plates? We have to turn the radio up high sometimes to hear it. thanks,

Mine got much nosier since we first bought it including the engine. I don't drive it normally but on this past road trip it was very noticeable. The door seals are not that great and the factory Firestone tires are not very quiet.

Get a new vehicle :)

Well even my Mercedes SUV has more road noise that I would like. Some vehicles are quiet and some are not, the Jeep is not.

I think tires have more to do with it than suspension. It could be your tread design (what are you running?) If you're running AT tires the aggressive tread will be loud. Heck, you can hear 'em coming for a mile.

I had RT43s on my Patriot and before I traded tires with Wifey's. She had the OEM LS2s and they are older and much noisier. I've gotten used to it, but I'll be glad to put on my snow tires this fall! Yeah, my snow tires are quieter than the LS2s! Also, as tires get older the rubber gets harder which is why they don't perform as well either. Almost any new tire will seem quieter at first; better tires will stay quieter.

If you want simple, you buy a Jeep. If you want quiet, you buy a Cadillac(or maybe these days, a Chevy/GMC). Either way, there is no way you are going to convince me the Patriot is loud.

because it's cheap and halfway efficient. Sound deadening costs money and weight, but most people don't notice that it's missing on their test drive so it's an easy thing to cut. Go to your local stereo shop and have them put in dynamat (or something like that, or do it yourself). If you do the floors, doors and roof it will help.

I am curious if anyone has done this, what kind of cost is involved, and how much of a difference it makes? Funny thing is I find most road noise is literally because of the road, as in our highways are crap around here. On the newly repaved sections it is not as bad, but on the older ones my wife and I have to practically yell at each other!

My flex is very noisy when driving on the highway. A big box is a noisy thing to push through the air, and I'll tell you, my flex cost A LOT more than any patriot new. and I have pretty quite tires on it. its wind noise that kills it, the wing mirrors are so big, and just big blocks on the side of the car.

My engine sounds like a vacuum.

Yes, I know that my engine technically IS a vacuum; I mean, it has a high-pitched whine, similar to a vacuum cleaner. I think it's the timing chain. But it's always been that way. It's sorta like, all the blower-whine supercharger, but without all that pesky horsepower.

Most have been forthcoming that the Patriot is, indeed, louder than many other vehicles. Our previous 2005 Caravan had a near sedan-like ride and quietness, better than the Patriot. I have also been in vehicles more noisy and/or rougher riding too. Our Patriot is not loud to the point of being unlikable, so if yours is exceptionally loud, you might want to investigate for problems. Maybe test drive a different, new one on similar roads for comparison.

Road type can make a huge difference. Our Pat is relatively quiet on smooth asphalt and concrete. On the more "pebbly" chip seal type asphalt there is noticeably more noise. Less insulation and maybe a suspension that transfers more noise to the cabin is the culprit. There are many other options if you want to pay quite a bit more.

I am curious to see if new tires (R-43's) this fall will make a difference over our 3.5 year old OEM Goodyear LS road tires.

We took Wifey's 2014 Patriot for a day-trip today. In terms of road noise it is quieter than the 2008 that I drive, but I notice less wind noise in my 2008.

I think the 2014 is quieter than our 2008, but that was not the case with our previous tire configuration as noted in my previous post: the big difference remains the tires. The noise followed the tires. You will find the LS2s are definitely louder regardless of the road surface and regardless of which vehicle they're on, and the RT43s will be clearly quieter. I really miss those RT43s on mine, but the LS2s are staying on until its time for the snow tires come out, or they fail (whichever comes first -- that's why their on my Patriot and She gets the RT43s).

Curiously, our 2008 seems to have a better ride than our 2014, and I don't think its the tires. The 2008 is obviously older and except for a few typical replacements, the suspension components are otherwise original -- maybe its mellowed with age. The 2014 definitely handles tighter but there is more road shock as well, esp. road patches and bridge seams.

Unrelated to tires but I also noticed how much more energy my aging 2.4/CVT combination has than the 2.0/5-spd. That was really a surprise, especially considering the 2008 has four times the miles in the rear-view mirror. I know the 2.4 has 20 more horses, but they make a huge difference, and the CVT mows down the hills quite efficiently. We were on some more hilly terrain than usual and the 2.0/5-spd spent a lot of time in 4th gear, and surprisingly in 3rd as well -- the lower gears and higher RPMs became well acquainted, but I know its worse to lug it, especially when the higher gears are inadequate to the task.

Love mine!

Hi,

New guy so please forgive if this has already been said. I see so many people saying "it's a jeep just get used to it that's how it is supposed to be". For me one of the great things about the patriot is that you can buy it for a good price and then mod it to make it your own. This is our second pat. My wife had an 11 limited. and then traded it for an evoque. I was always a car guy but since VW is now buying back my Jetta diesel, I went ahead and purchased a 16 patriot leftover. $16,830, Cherry red, FD1, 230 radio uconnect and sirus. they even gave me $1000 because the leased evoque was a competitive vehicle !. By the way, can't say enough about how wonderful the Temecula California Jeep dealer is. but manual locks and pretty basic. Fixed the locks with this amazon DNA DL-T4-2B-BK Black Door Power Lock Conversion Kit w/ Remote
by DNAMotoring only 25 dollars but the labor should be like a zillion dollars. Its really a hard job but it all works. cut down the interior sound with this.. its enough to do all 4 door panels inside ( do it when you are putting in the locks... ) amazon Noico 50 mil 25 sqft car Sound deadening mat, butyl automotive Sound Deadener, audio Noise Insulation and dampening by Noico
Added this just 'cus amazon Moonet Heavy Duty Non-Slip Mat Door Mat Cup Mat Car Pad Floor Mats Fit 2011 2012 2012 2014 2015 Jeep Compass Patriot 15pcs red ]. really, the best thing about a jeep, is that you can have any car you want you just have to put a little effort into it. I think the patriot would really benefit from painting the plastic wheel liners with sound deadener as well (next project). one thing to note, When i pulled the door panels off the '16 had a small patch of sound deadening material in the middle of the door, about the size of a notebook page (8.5 X 11?) this may be why i found it to be a little quieter than my wifes '11 so i guess you could make it quieter for almost nothing you could pretty much do it for 4 sheets of notebook paper size byutal aluminum material, so about 4 square feet!

Jeep should've installed a noise isolating windshield like the Compass has. We have had this discussion prior and most think the Compass has more sound proofing than the Patriot. I know the Pat looks great I had one but I need to put a hitch on someday and the 6 at tranny will prolly tow better with light stuff than the CVT. I am going to keep the Compass I feel and need to know that the tranny will take towing in the long run.

Just bought a 2016 Compass Sport. Coming from a 2005 Chevy Tahoe, which was fully loaded with basically everything they had, this Compass is noisy. However, driving my 1989 F250 with 33" A/T tires, the Compass is quieter. I may add more sound deadening in the doors and rear hatch, and see if that helps some. If not, it's not a big deal to me...it's a Jeep It comes with the territory.
