Water on right rear passenger side floorboard

So, like so many of you, I've had my Patriot into the dealership for water leak repairs for an unnecessary amount of times. They've sealed and resealed every part of my sunroof and my right rear passenger side door yet water continues to come in. I see no signs of this water running down the door and the seats aren't wet. It seems to saturate the carpet and eventually starts to puddle on the floor board.

The dealership as tested and retested time and time again for the water leaks and they alway find it, seal it, then a month later the next big rainfall comes and we're back where we started. I JUST picked my Pat up last night, did some running around in the torrential downpours and, of course, there's water on the floorboard again. It's never really a quick leak that the instant it starts raining I see it. There's no consistency with leaking while I'm driving, stationary, A/C on, etc.

Initially, the water leak was my sunroof and it was coming through my dome light. They fixed that in January and we didn't get much precipitation til Spring and now, of course, it's the rainiest summer we've ever had and now the water is just appearing on the floorboard and ONLY on the right rear passenger side.

My question is, does anyone have ANY thoughts on where this water could be coming in from? I love my Pat and I don't want to have to get rid of her but I live in Pittsburgh and there's always going to be precip year round...

I have no problem poking around and my boyfriend is pretty handy with car maintenance so if anyone can point us in the right direction to look it would definitely help!!

I do not have a sun roof model but have thought about what I would do to pin point the problem if I had it. Since you have a handy and mechanically inclined BF, my suggestion would be to "simulate" rainy conditions.

Do this under cover (garage or something). Have him sit in the rear passenger seat. You grab a hose and spray "artificial rain" on specific sections for a justifiable time. Start by just spraying the rear passenger door. Meanwhile, have the BF feel his way around the carpeting. After a few mins, if no water is seeping in, you mark off the door as not being the problem. Then move on to the roof. The roof is trickier now. The problem with roofs is that the leak could be up further than where the leak is actually at. So, concentrate on the sunroof only. Same exercise. If thats not the problem, then move up to the upper windshiel;d area... and so forth. At some point water "should" leak in. Once you get a positive leak, that is the information you need to take in to the dealer.

In your case, I doubt it's the water supply to the rear wiper. Unless you are like my neighbor, I doubt you spray water onto the rear glass while it's raining...

The worst that can happen with the above exercise is that you waste an hour or so.

once it happens 3 times, immediately write a formal Letter to Chrysler requesting a leak specialist to fix the problem and if the problem is not fixed then you will be contacting a lawyer to take them to court on the Lemon Law.

this is absolutely ridiculous that this is still happening to this day...

Couple of guesses here, based on past experience with other vehicles..
1/ You may have a lower windshield leak...water coming in around the edge of the windshield will "flow" down behind the plastic panels to the right of the passenger footwell....that would give you the pooling you describe.

2/ It has been mentioned on other threads, that if you are running wires from the engine compartment ie you have mounted some accessory lights and are running the wiring into the vehicle to a switch etc, there is a large rubber grommet on the "firewall" on the passenger side thru which those wires can be passed.....IF that grommet is not sealed properly , has not been installed properly, or someone has attempted to run wires thru it and forgot to seal it again, you will get water (from windshield runoff) going thru that grommet, and soaking the carpet below.
Have someone shine a bright light from the engine compartment when it is dark outside, while you take a look from the inside of the Pat...preferably with your head down at floor level looking up as though you were trying to see behind the glove box...

My bet is you will "see light"....thats an entry point for water!!!

Good luck..

cut your losses now, you seem to have gone back even more times than i have for a leak problem, so i feel really sorry for you. but like you've painfully experienced, this WILL NOT END, and it will get worse eventually. you have to think (down the line) of things like mold and mildew eventually, and when your warranty expries, then what? you're screwed even worse than you are right now. get a corolla or civic. you'll own those car for 20 yrs without a problem.

When checking for water leaks, always start low first with the water. If you go for the roof first and the leak is lower, you won't catch it. Double check that the AC condensation drain isn't blocked too (passenger side of the firewall).

thanks guys! I'm thinking it is something more to the inside paneling rather than water getting in directly from the outside. it rained all day yesterday, steady not the torrential downpour we've been having. I get back to my car after work, the rain has stopped and there's no water on the floor. I drive a few miles, still no rain and suddenly there's water in the back so it seems to be sort of pooling somewhere inside and then suddenly breaks loose and flows into the back seat.

I had an aftermarket remote starter installed last december - could they have not sealed the interior correctly? I can't see a reason that any of these wires would be on the right side of the vehicle as the wires run up the driver side but I'm not a mechanic so clearly I can't assume anything...

I have no leaks but I have noticed after huge downpours here in Miami that when I open the rear driver side door to put my bag in for the drive home there is some water on the step plate (I guess that's what it's called) but not inside the actual interior. To me it seems water can either pool up under the bottom of the door or maybe it's coming from the top of the door somewhere. But since it doesn't make it inside I really don't get concerned about it...

Alert I have this exact problem described above except it is the rear drivers side floorboard. I suspect it is coming through from the roof rail mount directly above the pillar. I have no other wet spots anywhere. NO warranty here..

i have the same issue with my 2008 jeep patriot 4x2 (no sunroof). i have waterleak on the floorboard both on the front passenger side and behind it, the rear right passenger side floorboard.

i suspect it is drain clogged issue.

i will update after my appointment with the dealer tomorrow.

go to the dealer and tell him to check the front of the car , behind the pedals , is there the problem . The sealant is not spread properly and you just need this simple operation , anything will be fine .
they have to go behind and re-apply the sealant that's all.
I had the same and not one single drop of rain is coming in again since I fix it .
and we are having rain any day since one month now "!!!

Could it be that some of the Patriots are collecting water from the floor pans??? I had a old car that the rear floor pans filled up with water that had spalshed up into the wheel wells and ran into the car. I had to weld a peice of sheet metal to bridge a half inch gap left by the manufacturer. There had probably been a rubber stopper in that spot but had long since dissapered. Could have some of these leaks be caused by a similar problem?

Kerriann: You said the carpet got wet AFTER driving a few miles. It may be that the front tire spraying the floorboard is allowing water to get through a joint in the floor pan. Shine a trouble light on the rear passenger carpet where the carpet is wet and then look under the car for any light. Do this in a dark garage or outside at night. My other guess would be water getting in the B (middle) pillar from the roof joint and running down the pillar soaking the carpet. You could eliminate this as the cause if you check the floor on the sides of the foot well and the carpet is dry.

I've been having the exact same problem out of nowhere for the past few months.Water gathers up on the rear passenger side flooboard. brought it to the dealership a few times without any positive results.
Anyone ever get it rightfully fixed?

I had this leak about three years ago. One of four leaks in my vehicle. It was fixed the first time. I can't remember how they fixed it.
