So, I had an unpleasant driving experience a few nights back....

My wife and I went camping for five nights in Cold Lake, Alberta (near the Canadian Forces air base). Things were not going our way on the last night, so at 7:30 PM we decided to pack up and run for home. We were out of there just after 9:00.
You have to understand how we camp - we tent it, but it's really just temporary moving. So our poor little Jeep was loaded right to the gills! With the bikes on the rack, I measured a full 2" drop at the rear tow hook before we left. That's with 3/4 tank and us not in it! But we certainly weren't overloaded - maybe close, but not over!
It took me quite a while to figure out why 4 out of 5 people (literally - I counted!) flashed their high beams at me! I tried EVERYTHING - at first I thought it was my fogs, so I shut them off. I tried leaving my highs on until I KNEW that oncoming drivers KNEW that I switched to lows. I tried leaving it on lows. I tried using the flash-to-pass to get some of these drivers to shut off their highs - but many of them just BLAZED them right at me anyway!! I was SO frustrated!!
Shouldn't our headlight adjustments be adequate throughout the vehicle load range? Am I supposed to constantly adjust my lights for load? Or not drive at night unless empty? And aren't the lights supposed to be self-levelling??
AARGH!!

Sorry to hear about your experience.
I have to wonder also: there have been times when I get someone flashing their brights at me when I know for fact I do NOT have mine on. Only difference between your experience and mine is- I had NO load in back. Nada! It's happened a few times to me on recent trips.
I wonder if the factory settings aren't just a *tad* too high?

Anyone else have this problem?

Ive heard from several people that they had problems with the headlights being
a *tad* too high?
. Im sure the fact that you measured a 2" drops has a lot to do with this. Just a slight drop made the already-aimed-too-high headlights become way too high.

I'm trying to think of ANY car that has "self-leveling" lights....some luxery cars have ride control that levels the whole car.

My friend who has a Liberty and was hauling a trailer with two ATV on it. He wasn't overloaded. Only this trailer and it's not heavy on the tongue. He was behind me and I was on my car. His lights was off so the DRL (daytime running light) was on.

It was very very very annoying to have lights on my face by the mirrors ... It was on a sunny day ! I have had to change the direction of my right and center mirror. First time it happened to me.

Imagine with headlights on and at night... Never happened with other SUV. Only Jeep.

Maybe it's a trademark ;)

I do not know of any vehicle that has self-leveling head lights. I drove mine last night for the first long trip at night and thought the lights were reaching a little far out. I plan on checking the aim today as several cars flashed me also. I also notice a lot of cars with driving or fog lights on all the time and many are almost like having your high beams on so if you drive that way I guess you can expect to be flashed.

I've been flashed before, too. The time most recent that stands out is when my family was out visiting and my Pat was loaded to the gills with 5 adults and accompanying luggage...we were probably riding pretty low.

don't the australian model or the european models have headlight leveling? or at the push of a button

I just thank God you're in Florida then.

I don't think I would feel too good about myself if I blinded a person just long enough for them to have delayed reactions and hurt themselves or worse yet, someone else.:(

Any idea how these work? Inquiring minds need to know.....

When I get flashed like that in any car, I just flash them with my Brights to show them that they are indeed off. Then they're probably like..."Damn"...

I had this problem with the '06 Grand Cherokee, but not with the Pat.:wow:
People are going to love my wife and I when this baby gets lifted this week.:pepper:
It may be just an intensity thing that Jeep builds these headlamps to as well.
I tried Zenon for a while, they burn out from the high heat level, not worth it at all unless you have deep pockets and like replacing bulbs. Also tried Zenon fog lights, way too hot. Rain would ruin them.
Do the wall or garage door check of your beams if you have any doubts as to them being level, high or just out of adjustment.

I get flashed fairly often. Not so much when I'm alone but last night I had passengers i the back and I was flashed by everyone. (oddly enough is illegal in MN or WI, I can't remember which) I said to my wife last night, "I'm going to have the dealer check the lights next oil change" I want them to aim them down a little even if they are right on spec.
