This is likely in the tech. literature, but well, I'll ask here too.

What's the difference in a Jeep Patriot transmissions:
4-speed auto.
CVT
FDI
FDII

I am looking at an '07 but whether or not that deal falls through, I want to know more, anyways.

Advice/opinions are apprec.

They don't do a 4 speed Auto....Only CVT Constantly variable transmission ( A metal segmented band running up & down 2 cone shaped pullies to alter the ratios.

5 speed manual...

FD1 Basic 4x4 ( CVT or Man 5 speed)

FD2 Trail rated 4x4 ( CVT only)

2litre gas engine 4x2 only.( 5speed or CVT)

2litre or new 2.2 litre Diesel ....6 speed Getrag manual. ( Export market only)

OK, that paints a much clearer pic. in my tiny mind.
That the dealer's listing is off-base with "4-speed auto. transmission" doesn't surprise me at all.
So, w/ respect to auto. tranny's:
All auto's in the Patriot are CVT, and all (autos) are either a FDI or FDII, and the FDII has a low-speed crawl bear ratio, correct?

I remember reading about just that kind of drive in Popular Science, many many years ago as the "drive transmission of the future".

RE Diesels.... no comment. I worked in a refinery as a capital projects manager for some years, watched the regs "coming our way".
Thanks for the replies.

CVT

Years ago I used to run a Volvo 66. this had a 1.4 Renault engine & DAF Van Doorne CVT trans. This was dual rubber drive belt ( Like an engine drive belt ) Exposed underneath the platform . The selector had 3 positions D N R & a button on the dash to lock it into low .This thing used to shoot off like a bat out of hell up to 35mph or until the engine caught up with the transmission & used to whirrrrrr like a sewing machine .

The FDI CVT2 has a 6.12:1 ring and pinion and the FDII CVT2L has a 8.12:1 R & P. This is why the FDII revs slightly higher on the freeway. Otherwise the CVT's are identical. If I remember correctly, the manual is a 4.12:1. The crawl ratios are a calculation between the transmissions first gear value and it's ring and pinion and tire size, so the FDII has 19:1, the FD1 has 14:1 and the manual 5-speed is in the 15:1 range.

All 2007 models had the L range on the shifter, for it to be a true FDII, look for metal skid plates (under engine and under each side of the fuel tank) and tow hooks.

2008 and up models, only the FDII had the L range, FDI got the auto-stick.

This particular one is an '07. I don't recall seeing tow hooks and I can't get out there again today (snowing here :icon_rolleyes:).

Are tow hooks straight forward to install? They are something I think I'd want. I assume they are on front and rear, correct?

Is this brand a decent hitch?

You can add tow hooks later, search the knowledge base section of the forum for some great how-to's. And since you're installing a hitch, you won't need the rear tow hook anyway.

Just about any hitch you put on the back will be fine since we only have a 2000lb max tow rating.

Yep, I figured there are plenty of 'how-to' threads.
And yep, I understand the tow capacity. That's the biggest drawback of the vehicle. I'm not sure of the weight of our ba$$ boat, but will cipher it out soon..... as soon as the snow leaves!
'anyone here happen to know the weight of a Hydra-Sport 175????? :D

If this is correct, the only difference in the drivetrain are the gearsets, then what function does the (L) position serve? It was my understanding that with the FDII in (L) that speed across the ENTIRE range was reduced. Including top speed. If this is correct it would seem to indicate that there IS a difference in the CVT, not merely an axle ratio difference. Hence CVT2L.

The FDI is the 4X4 without all of the other FDII package stuff. The FDI is available with the CVT or the 5 speed manual transmission. If you want to get down on your hands and knees you can look underneath and see if there is a driveshaft with universal joints going back to the rear axle. Using a mirror might help.

In 2008, the FDI cam with four wheel disc brakes. The FWD had drum rear brakes. Don't know about the 2007.
