Your computer computes the need for the oil change based on the way you drive ie: duty cycle. Your computer might be overly cautious or faulty. Or maybe it right and you drive like a rally car driver?

 

Mine came on at 2500 as well. I waited to reach 3000 for the change though. I am almost to 5500 so we soon see whether or not it is going to come on.

A few other people have had theirs come on early in the first 3000 miles. Might be part of computer controlled break-in period? Any insiders know for sure?

I typically drive 16 miles (8 mile commute) a day with an average speed of 25 MPH (scangauge info). Hardly ever see over 3000 RPM, most time spent below 2000 RPM.

 

oops, forgot about the break in period. I remember a while back some people mentioned that the compute had a break in period built into it which even affected gas mileage...

 

I am at 2800 miles and so far no oil change light.
Most of my driving is 45 to 50 MPH with several 100 mile trips in the mix

 

the pats have an oil change light/message? Which ones? lol? I dont remember seeing anything in my manual or my wifes, and I have a loaded limited (every option but uconnect- WTF? thats like one of the only features I actually wanted), and she has a convenience package only sport

 

2008's and newer got that feature.

 

I have an 07 Limited Pat and I had my oil changed around 2900mi and no light came on.

 

It has nothing to do with driving style or break in. It gives a message when you are within 10-15% of 3000 miles since the last time the "oil change" odometer was reset. You can reset it yourself if you have the right equipment or follow the directions in the manual.

 

I stand corrected. It is based off RPM's and hours. Curious.

Personally, I wish I could permanently turn the ^%#$(* off.

 

I don't think that is the case..
My wife's 02 tahoe has a oil change light and it is based on engine hours vs engine RPM or something along that line.

Also if it was simple as 10 or 15 % then everyone would have the oil change light come on at the same mileage.

I thought the OC light was based on oil condition and that there was a sensor that check the condition of the oil.
I plan to change the oil to synthetic at 3000 miles even if the light doesn't come on.

 

It is based on RPM, engine hours and temperature. For instance I run 25 mile to work and 25 miles back each day. It took 5,650 miles before my oil change message came on. When I was closer to work with my 99 silverado the light would come on around 3,250 miles. The temperature piece is especially important in the winter when oil needs to reach operating temperature to burn off contaminates.

Bottom line is I am going to trust mine and follow the manual. After all the life time warranty does apply.

 

well i drove my patriot like a grandma for the first 2500 miles and my light still came on at 2500 so i think it is preset to come on at 2500 intervals from each reset.

those of you that have 07 models i dont think you have this feature. This is for non EVIC 08 models. Also there may be a difference between 4x2 and 4x4 models for the preset.

 

mine didn't come on until about 3200 miles... but I had already changed it at 1000 miles , its just something I do on new vehicles.

 

My oil change message came on at 9200km. I had already changed it at 5000km while getting the oil cooler installed.

 

Had my first oil change alittle late at 3300 miles... never saw a message... Now it has 5900 miles on it and i am getting the change oil message...so i am starting to think these computers are just random...

Even my Jeep dealership mechanic couldn't clearly spell out what caused the lights to go on.
My notice first came at 2500 miles (almost exactly!). I changed it then and told the guy about it. He reset everything and yet at 5000 miles (2X2500?) it came on again. This time I waited until it got closer to 6000 miles (5900 to be exact). Our driving style is varied. She just putts to work and I usually have a heavy foot when driving, which is seldom as it is really her car.
I'd love to hear a good, logical explanation from a Jeep mechanic on how this operates!

 

Im about to hit the 4500 mile mark on mine and still havent seen an oil change light. so as i figure it, another 1500 miles and itll be ready to change. Ive got like 6 free oil change coupons from Jeep and about 4 more from my dealer, so i think its covered for a while.

 

I'm going to change the oil this weekend. Got my fram sure drain kit today so the next oil change will be much less messy. I believe that the oil change light uses the hours meter and when it hits the equivilent of 3 months it comes on. I've had my patriot for over 3 months now. Plus I do mostly stop and go driving so that may have something to do with it also.

I use fram oil filters. So people don't like fram but I have used them in every vehicle I have ever owned and never had a problem. I like the rough texture grip. Makes it easier to get it off.

 

My came on at 3900kms or about 2400 miles. Dealer said the light comes on when the computer wants a change but the manual say change every 10000kms/6000miles. I acted pissy and they changed it for nothing. I will let you know when it comes on again.

 

Mine came on at 2,333. I was planing on changing it at 3k anyway.

 

I changed mine @ 3000 miles - no light was on.
I switched to full syn Mobil1 used a fram :-(

Has anybody tried resetting the the oil change indicator system? i changed my oil at 9200KM and i wasn't sure if i had to go to the dealership to have this light turned off. After reading this thread in the forum, i checked my owners manuel. I fully depressed the accelerator pedel 3 times as stated and turned the ignition to the off/lock position. I've tried doing this several times and the light keeps coming on. Am i depressing the accelerator pedel too fast?

 

Mine came on at exactly 2500. I knew I had beed in very cold weather, very wet(snoy) weather, short dives (5 miles to work) and extenedd idle times (wife likes to "run" in for a few items and leaves me with the young'n for 30 minutes) I had no problems with the change as I know I abuse the engine. The dealership did not reset the light so I did it right there in the service bay. Took two attempts. Make sure to turn the key to on, and fully press and depress the pedal three times, take your time as ten secs is a long time. then turn it off. The first time I didn't fully realease the pedal, Second time worked like a charm.
