oil change 6 months?

so i have always been one to use synthetic oils but change them out every 3 months or 5k miles or so. Well, i have 3 cars, and i don't put many miles on 2 of them (2013 patriot and 2007 xterra). My 2017 patriot is my DD and even there I don't put many miles on her.

So my 2013 pat and 2007 xterra had their oil changed in september. that's 5 months ago. But about 2k miles on each max. Can I/Should I go to 6 motnhs? I refuse to go a whole year- I know the manual says under no circumstances go beyond 12months or 10,000 miles whichever comes first...

thoughts?

I want to keep all my rides going strong for many more years...

I'm not high mileage either so I change about every 10-11 months. I would change at six months if I drove mainly short trips and the engine didn't even have a chance to reach operating temperature. Every three months is really hard to justify.

The oil change prompt is supposed to be programmed to consider the temperature range, your driving style, as well as the interval since the last change.

People with low mileage antique or collector cars will change spring and fall, others say once a year or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. Those are people who worship their cars!

With synthetic oil you should be able to push the limits a little, but no way I'd go over a year.

The only real way to know for sure is to do a used oil analysis. Go ahead and stretch it out to 6 months, then get the oil tested to see where it stands. Then make an informed decision. 5speed is spot on about short tripping, never getting the engine to operating temps., and its negative effects on oil (moisture and maybe fuel dilution). I've read that cars with direct injection might benefit from "shorter" oil change intervals, but that technology is still evolving. The main benefit of synthetic oil is not less wear, it is extended oil change intervals because synthetic holds up just a wee bit better. And it is just a very small wee bit. The gap between conventional and synthetic gets smaller with every new oil classification upgrade. Just my opinion.

Per your manual and the oil manufactures, a 5,000 mile or 12 month interval is recommended.
For synthetic that is 10,000 miles or 12 months.

from my 2013 manual-

NOTE: Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or twelve months,
whichever comes first.

it states earlier regarding synthetics:

Synthetic Engine Oils
You may use synthetic engine oils provided the recommended
oil quality requirements are met, and the recommended
maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes
are followed.

so with that said, they want you to either change it when the light comes on or 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever happens first.

I decided to change it over lunch today. IMHO, 5 months is long enough to have oil in the crankcase.

On my 2008, I change the oil twice a year at 10K OCI using Mobil One full synthetic available at Walmart for $25/5 quart jug. I have 124K on it now and it runs fine.

As a side note, I have had many vehicles over the years that I ran Walmart Supertech oil through them with 7500K OCI without a problem. Putting well over 100K on them as well. Where I live the bodies rust out and the engines are still going strong.

There are plenty of debates online regarding the "best" oil to use and the OCI. Most Dealers will tell you the days of 3K oil changes are over. The ones where I live are at 5K OCI under normal operating conditions.

Matter of fact, my 08 states the OCI to be 7500 under normal conditions.
