JEEP PATRIOT COMPASS TRAILER TOW ENGINE COOLER MOPAR https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009OGAUF6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2P.sBb8J67XTJ

We’re having a tow hitch installed on our 2010 Jeep Patriot. I’m considering having one of these installed. However, isn’t this similar to what caused all the post 2005 Nissans to have coolant and transmission cross contamination?

Anyone install this? Have you had any issues?

I've installed it on my 2011. It was fairly straightforward with no troubles. You could notice a difference in your oil temp . Your coolant temp might rise slightly as it is now cooling the oil as well but your engine temp will run cooler overall. I don't tow anything put installed it anyway figuring it could only help and its not that expensive.

You just need a special hex socket (M12) to get the old oil filter insert post off and the new one on. Torque it to 35 ft. lbs./49N.m It's a great time to replace your coolant as well (use HOAT only- Zerex G05 meets Chrysler standard MS9769) but if you do it yourself, please learn from my mistake, don't take the lower radiator petcock out. It's almost impossible and getting it in is even harder. Just disconnect your lower radiator hose. You will get out about just as much coolant and save your self 3 hours labor.

I'm not a huge fan of plate type heat exchangers. They have their uses of course and provide a lot of surface area in a small package. The downside is that each plate is gasketed from the next, so there are a lot of gaskets. Doesn't take much coolant in the oil to damage an engine.
That said, I would use one if needed but I'd be OCD about checking the engine oil for the first few drives, and I'd consider it a maintenance item - probably replace every five years say.

Agreed that the hoses are actually more likely to fail than the cooler. The difference is that the hose won't leak directly into the engine oil, and the leak will be obvious. Not sure what you mean by "the heat fin unit", I thought we were talking about the Mopar engine oil cooler, which is a plate type heat exchanger.
