Loud transmission sound at times

I am having a random recurring event with my 2010 2.4L FD-1 AWD CVT Patriot with about 42,000 miles.

It seems when I am on the road for an extended period, I start to get a lot of noise from the tranny. It sounds like the normal sounds, just alot louder. It doesn't seem to effect performance, and I don't drive a lot so have only heard it a few times. The increased sound level returns to normal if I park it for a while.

I wondered if this was normal when the tranny gets heated up. I went to a Jeep dealer, as it is still under warranty. They said that the CVT has vents that open when it reaches a certain temp to help it cool off and the louder noise is because of the sound allowed to escape through those open vents.

I almost felt like they may be pulling the curtains over my eyes, but at the same time sounds plausible.

Does anyone else have this issue or know if it is normal? Thanks.

~Mike

The fluid starts to foam when it gets too hot, and the CVT pump trying to pump foam makes the whine noise.
2010+ have a thermostat in the trans cooler lines, its replaceable, and not too expensive a part. It sounds like that is starting to fail. If your transmission is hot, and the cooler lines are way colder, you know for sure.

Cali-brate, thanks for the info. We had this happen to us going uphill on I-70 when the outside temp was over 90. The CVT was making the infamous jet engine sound. Took it in to the dealer and they could hear the sound, but the fluid level was normal and there were no metal shavings or fault codes stored.

I'll try to remember to check those cooler lines next time it happens.

I get the same whine, and have since about 15,000 miles. I generally only hear it after driving for 4+ hours, and usually only hear it when pulling away from a stop. When pulling away from a stop the droning goes away when I get up to speed. It doesn't seem to make a difference what the temp is outside... its done it in 32° and its done it in 105°. Kind of hard to reproduce for the dealer, so I'm not worrying about it for now

question #1: vents? a transmission is a closed system (minus the dipstick opening). can a more experienced Patriot owner verify if the CVT has active vents? i would have asked the dealership to show me these vents

question #2: why is your CVT getting that hot in the first place when you're on a 4 hrs trip which i presume is mostly at highway speeds without changing ratios? long highway trips are the best for all transmissions

question #3: did they check the fluid level and document that it is acceptable? i would get that in writing. what is the CVT fluid change interval?

as soon as you hear any sort of whining or increased volume level coming from a transmission, it's a red flag for excess friction (whether it's a planar gear transmission or CVT). both require lubrication and both will let you know (thankfully) when it's not getting enough.

the original starter to this thread complained of a louder tranny noise. Didn't necessarily say it whined. There are many threads on this forum about a very common whining noise that usually occurs when conditions are on the warm side. In my case it was 100+ degrees outside and was hauling 700lbs going uphill when the whining started.
The high pitched whining sound resolve is to either replace the tranny cooler... and/or... replace worn out tranny fluid which has been worn out and lost its viscosity ... or ability to perform right which causes the foaming which in return causes a loud "whining" sound.
In my case it was just the fluid change which was covered under warranty.

btw welcome to the forum

Just happene to me

Yesterday. After driving mine for 20 to 30 min mine started to whine bad. It kept whining the rest of the night. Even after parking it for 30 min. But this morning after it sat for over 12 hours. It's quiet. Yesterday was only 80 out. But I was in heavy traffic.

I only have 33k miles

This forum is great jeep should put the URL in the owners manual

when I talked to the dealership here, they said to change it every 30k which seems low, but it is a different style of transmission so maybe that's just a crappy byproduct of the CVT
