First thread here... I just bought a 2017 Patriot with 9,700 miles...LOVE it. .. Although I won't be needing an oil change for a while, I wanted to get some opinions of STP 5W20 Conventional and their SYN Full Synthetic motor oils ... I ask this because these are what my mechanic stocks ... apparently they meet / exceed all required specs and have a quality additives package as well ... anyone here use these STP Motor oils? If so, what are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hi again. I just corrected my post in your other thread. In my original response I said exactly the opposite of what I intended. What I meant to say is that synthetic oils are good, but don't go as long between changes as they say you can -- they tend to exaggerate.

I hope you and your Patriot take good care of each other for many happy miles. :)

I (personally) don't like the STP brand. But that aside, double check your owners manual for the correct specs. This is copied straight from the manual:

We recommend you use API Certified SAE 5W-20 Engine
Oil, meeting the requirements of FCA Material Standard
MS-6395 such as Mopar, Pennzoil, and Shell Helix. Refer to
your engine oil filler cap for correct SAE grade

I would make SURE your oil has the FCA Material Standard MS-6395. It will be listed on the tech section of the oil container. Not all oils do, even "modern" oils. I use Castrol Edge in my 2017 Patriot. Cost a little more, but I've always had great success with Castrol products.

The MOST important thing about oil, is that you change it regularly, and check the level. Plain and simple. Too many people don't change it often enough or let it run low/out. Take the 30 seconds and check it while getting gas instead of looking at your phone, and if you use regular oil change ever 3-5k miles and if you are using synth change ever 5-7k miles. (depending on your driving environment). using specific oil weights are not nearly as important as just changing it. Brand/ additives/ formulations these all really don't matter. Weight does matter a bit, but most shops carry the weight your car requires, so its not anything to worry about. Just change it, and use a good filter.
