09 Patriot.

Gf spilled her drink all in where the 4WD switch is. It started smoking and ever since, no shock, the 4WD!, ESP, ABS etc lights have been randomly going haywire.

Pulled the console out, another shock the plug on the wiring harness for the 4WD switch is melted exposing a pin. It's the only damaged plug/wire. The switch appears to be in tact.

I ordered the new harness online, but for this weekend I would like to get the lights off and cruise working.

I am going to cut the melted plug off, but I need to know which wires to connect to each other from this plug to jump the switch and make the Jeep think everything is "normal". IE 4WD off, no short. As if nothing ever happened. But the switch won't actually be plugged in.

Anyone know?

Wow! What was in that drink to have that much conductivity??!! Time to change her choice of drinks, or change the gf....

I would suspect that if you can get the switch out, you'll find some codes on the terminals that will tell you which circuit and whether the terminal is C (common), NC (normally closed), or NO (normally open). Be sure and CAREFULLY mark the terminal positions with the wire colors, remembering that many wires look the same with only a slight variation in the stripe color.

I'm sure someone on this forum has access to a wiring diagram that will facilitate your task. I think I would want to replace the switch and return all functions to normal, but there could be more damage in the confuser box as well.

Good Luck and keep us posted...

Wow, I'm surprised there was enough power there to melt a plug. I would check a few automotive supply places, you should be able to get a replacement plug fairly cheap and change it. The dealership will charge you a lot(or try to sell you the whole wiring harness) so I wouldn't even bother with them.

As far as jumping it, the computer controls pretty much everything on these vehicles so you may not be able to solve the problem that way. There aren't many old-fashioned relays on these things and I've found that the computer sometimes sends a small amount of power to a circuit that should be "open" to monitor it. Put simply, it may not turn any warning lights off unless all the wires are connected properly. Check your fuses as well and hope that it didn't fry anything inside the computer. Good luck, hopefully you get it figured out.

The switch itself seems to be fine. I even saw it function the other day during a brief moment when the system was acting normal. I already ordered a new harness it was only like $25 for the whole thing.

The drink was Mountain Dew and my guess is she spilled enough to "fill" that small pocket the switch sits in. She likes to use that area as a catch all. I digress lol.

I'll just wait for the new harness. How does the PCM reset work?
