All the gas engines (the 2.0 and 2.4) have a chain. Only the diesels have a belt.

 

That's what I thought as well. My book shows no schedule for changing any belts.

I much prefer having a chain to a belt.

 

what booklet are you looking at?
my 07 maintenance schedule shows no such thing
few months ago I had a rattle thinking it could have been timing chain,
discussed it with dealer, timing chain is not a service item, if it fails or needs to be replaced it would be covered under lifetime engine warranty,
they inspected it for me and it was fine,
regardless there is no maintenance schedule for 07 timing chain

This booklet was a "soft copy" that I received prior to my '08 being delivered. Page 394 (of 425...) shows this item under 2.4L only. I was looking up the info on U-COnnect, and discovered this page and thought that I recalled we (2.4 owners...) had a chain, not a belt. Problem/mystery solved! Thanks everyone.

 

good to know we have a chain. not ABOUT to start ripping into that part of the engine. I thought I had learned my lesson from the last FWD car I had. Guess not. sideways engines SUCK to work on.

 

Without a doubt. My 77 Scout was gear driven no belt no chain.epper:

 

at least a four cylinder transversally mounted motor is close to completely rebuildable in the vehicle vs. a V6 or V8 transversally mounted motor where three or four cylinders are against the firewall

 

Just to re-iterate . . . we're sure the 08's have a chain? My son just bought one and in Googling I found some threads where people are saying belt and others where they say chain. Needless to say . . . I am scratching my head.

 

Not a timing belt, chain, I think he was asking about the accessory belt (for alt and ac compressor, etc.). There are good videos on youtube showing how to do that. not too bad of a job, but you have to do a big part of it through the passenger side wheel well. (or is it the driver's side? I don't remember)

 

My heart skipped a beat. My Tiburon had a belt, and there were multiple reports of wrecked engines when the belt broke. Our Versa has a chain, as well, fortunately.

 

Patriots with gas engines all have chains. The diesel engine versions have belts.

I had the oil pan off of my 2009 patriot with a 2.4L engine and yes it has a timing chain....No belt.....epper:
